Player Discussion Auston Matthews (Captain Edition)

He had a strong game today, obviously scoring that goal was much needed but he was good all night. Still needs to elevate his game to another level because we know he can physically do it. He's secured the contract(s), time for him to dominate.

He was gaining doubters just because the last game may have been his worst in a playoff game.

He comes back like a leader. Gets hit with a clear high stick and no call, then ironically gets called for a high stick.

Leaders just find a way. Winners just find a way. Let's hope the team duplicates this intense defensive approach for Game Seven, don't waste this big goal and big win with a team of guys willing to sacrifice for the victory.

Get Game Seven and reach the Final Four that so many other Leaf captains have achieved. In fact, go much further, but Game Seven is next up.

What the hell?

In the entire history of the franchise, only he and Sittler have scored game-winners in elimination games while being Captains?

None of the O6 era legends did this? I'm surprised it was never done by Clark, Sundin or Tavares (Gilmour wasn't Captain that long).

Biggest playoff goal of his career. Hopefully that gets the monkey off his back now. Great response game from him and Marner, that's what we need and he came through. Set a real good tone, in a positive way tonight.

There will lots of blame to go around, but this guy deserves the most scorn. To come out like that tonight as a Captain, he's a joke. I have zero respect for him, so gifted, no jam or leadership abilities. Just a pretty boy who's had it too easy.
If you believe Matthews is entitled I have bad news for you.

The Covid kids coming up now are far worse. We are having an increasingly tough time restructuring how to coach younger athletes.

Helicopter parents, can't deal with adversity or failure, soft as butter on a warm day.

It's absurd

His biggest moment, on the big stage Sunday, he can rewrite all the narratives. This whole core gets a fresh take if we make it to the Conference Finals, especially slaying the dragon.

I don’t know if he deserves most, but it’s between him and Marner.

For what it’s worth, I thought he stepped up in game 6, but we’ll see if it’s just another blip or maybe he was finally embarrassed enough to take ownership of our potential success. I’ll believe it when I see it.

It was, but are we really letting him off the hook just because Bob let in that muffin of a shot?

Oh absolutely not. That kind of Game 6 output is more or less what we need from him every other game, not once a series. You add one extra Matthews goal in the right place in the series, Leafs could have won 4-2. If we want to win this Florida series 4-3, Matthews is going to have to find more ways to score more goals, play a 200 foot game at the same time.
