Player Discussion Auston Matthews (Captain Edition)

He said we have to be better myself included. Him saying himself included means he's talking about himself.
“Myself included” after how many “we need to be better” comments. Him sliding that small comment in at the end of one sentence doesn’t really scream accountability for one if not the worst playoff game we’ve ever seen from Matthews in such a crucial game.

Matthews and Mariner’s comments after every loss can literally be a recording at this point. It’s the same shit they say and never take full accountability. But let’s pay them top dollar!

You interview McDavid after a game like this, I guarantee to you you would see the frustration in his facial expressions, responses, etc to the media and he’d come out next game and take over. And I’m only comparing these bums to McDavid because they feel like they should be getting paid like him.

It's always emotionless canned comments. May as well let AI answer questions. The least he could do is put some hairspray up in that lid and look like Doc Brown (Lloyd)

I didn't love how he threw himself in there as an afterthought, he's the Captain and lead the charge of dogshit that game, literally the worst of all to start the game. Tanev comes out and takes blame immediately, Matthews tries to spread it around. And Mitch, I could pull an interview from five years ago, it hasn't changed. Where is the anger with these two?? Maybe that's the problem.

Exactly, his “myself included” comment almost seemed forced to be included. That was literally the worst Matthews game I’ve ever watched, would have liked to see some more accountability for such a terrible game from our captain.

It's up there for sure, unfortunately I've seen it before. But as Captain, particularly disheartening. Barring a miracle comeback, I'm done with him, he doesn't have another gear, doesn't have the royal jelly that makes a champion.

On his way out the door, Ryan O' Reilly went to management and told them that Matthews, Marner and Keefe would never win a Stanley Cup.

He was right on the money. Marner MIGHT have a shot if he's the number 3 or 4 guy behind playoff juggernauts (similar to the Four Nations situation), but Matthews will never achieve that because he has to be the number 1 guy.

This era needs to end. We need to rebuild.

I caught a bit of overdrive yesterday, the panel was answering a question that went something like this - what are the odds that tomorrow, we'll be saying wow, what a great game from Auston Matthews.

Hayes and Noodles said 33/34%, then O'Dog emphatically says 100%.

I hope I remember to tune in at 4PM, hopefully they talk about this. I mean I like O'Dog and I admire the optimism, but holy smokes did he ever step in it this time!

O'Dog certainly didn't hold back on the panel after the game though, and rightfully so.

Biggest game of this core's career with this team, and they came out with an absolute dud.

anyone kind of feel sorry for Matthews? They put the camera on him after the 1st goal against and based on his facial expression it looks like he feels the pressure. Part of the reason he can't perform has to be the pressure at this point. I think the reputation of not being able to get it done in these kind of situations haunts him. He's not trying to lose to go on vacation like some people suggest.

I almost always turn off the game when it's over (though I did watch the full 60 minutes last night ;)), but good for him. I wouldn't expect anything else, he's wrong sometimes (aren't we all) but he seems like he's always being honest about what he thinks. He's also right more often than he's wrong and I remember well how critical he was of Marner before the season started.

No.

No. I don’t feel any sympathy for him.

He came into the season unhealthy and decided to wing it and prioritize non Leaf commitments and has won exactly nothing.

Here is Matthews (highest paid player in NHL) record vs. Florida playoffs career.

10 games 0 goals 5 assists 5 points.

No. He is paid to perform and as the highest paid player in the league he gets very little runway. Of course every player will have rough patches but this is normal for Matthews over the last 8-9 years.
He gets no sympathy. Do the dam job no matter how hard it is

did this actually happen? wtf

Where is the frustration from him? Where is the fire or the leadership? I've captained a beer league team and I've torn strips off my team between periods when we sucked ass and they LOVED me for it. We're paying to be there, there's no scouts and our wives don't listen when we tell them about the game. And yet, a completely normal bunch of dudes have more competitive fire in each of our little fingers than the highest paid player in the NHL.

"This isn't !@$#ing junior, bro!" is the closest thing the Leafs have had to a moment of internal accountability this entire era.

Leadership is critically important. We can see how the team reacts when the Captain, the guy, is sitting on the bench stewing in his own piss. You can be calm and cool, or you can be a firebrand, you can even be a little bit incompetent, but you cannot be smaller than the moment. People fight in wars and keep cool heads when they're getting shot at. This captain can't lead some guys during a freaking hockey game?

It's pathetic.

Why would I feel sorry for him? He is still the highest paid player in the NHL. If he cant handle the pressure, don't expect to get paid like someone that can.

If you can't handle the heat, get out of the kitchen. He demanded to be paid more than any other player in the league, and his reputation as a choker is because he is one. It's very likely true that his failure is compounding on itself and making him worse, but the only person he can blame is the one in the mirror.

He's weak. There are lots of weak people who we can feel sorry for, but there's not much sympathy to be had for those who made their own problems.

No. Yesterday I posted that I hoped Bennett would grab him and beat him up, but I think I'm being too nice. I feel sorry for guys like Tanev who sacrifice their body for the team when they have teammates like this.
