Player Discussion Auston Matthews (Captain Edition)

We will get inbearest if we show up and beat Ottawa.
I can't see them losing this series but I can't see them beating Florida. We do not have the players who can deal with Bennett, Tkachuk, Marchand, Ekblad and they have a much better third line than ours. Bob likely outplays Stolarz and the 3 amigos get neutered. There is only so much Tanev can do to hold the fort if the 3 amigos score 3 goals between them in 5 games.

He’s not a top 20 player in the playoffs. A goal scorer who only scores 2 goals in his last 15 playoff games isn’t that. I’m not sure he ever was. His drop off in play from regular seasons to playoffs is probably unprecedented.
In 60 career playoff games, he does have 24 goals and 54 points.

That's an 82 game pace of nearly 33 goals and 74 points. A drop off? yes.

But over the time of his career, that does put him 20th in the league (among guys with at least 20 playoff games) in goals per game, and tied for 13th in game winning goals over the period (and he may be better than that as a lot of the guys he is tied with or ahead of him have a lot more games played.)

he has a ppg of ~25

There are also guys under him I easily take over him in the playoffs during that span including:
Ryan O'Reilly
Barkov
M Tkachuk
Q Hughes

the only person above him i would not take over that span is Huberdeau. so yes matthews is not a top 20 playoff player over his career

Moreover, in the top 50 of goals during that span, only 4 guys have a shooting percentage under 10%
Patrice Bergeron
Tyler Seguin
Cale Makar
Nikita Kucherov
Auston Matthews

so the "greatest" goal scorer of this generation is around two chokers, a playmaking winger, and a f***ing defencemen.

Yeah but those are also 20th place stats compiled almost exclusively in the first round when the stakes aren’t even that high, when he’s fresh and healthy in most years. You weigh that against someone who is producing in a conference finals, in a finals, winning a cup, 2 months into the playoff journey and he’s still well below his regular season standard, in the lowest stakes possible. And he’s already a spent force by the second half of a 7 game set. If this is the Lord of the Rings he’s not even getting out of the Shire. Keep in mind the highest scoring active Leaf pick in the playoffs is Carter effing Verhaeghe and not the multi Rocket Richard winner.

Every night in the playoffs we say this is an opportunity to do something special. He can’t change 9 years but the next best time is tonight. Is he going to break though? Maybe, but I don’t think the trust and faith is there.

I guess winning series doesn’t matter. Just individual stats. Maybe that’s his problem.

I don’t understand how he channels his emotions because it’s very un-hockey.

If you have nerves, get physical. Bump along the wall a little bit, battle for space and channel that Michael Jordan “I took that personally.” Soon those excess jitters burn off and you’re just playing and having fun.

And breaking sticks on the bench? How about just run a guy over?

His tendency to want to stay cool and never use his emotions physically is just not how most players do things.
And without emotions in the playoffs. You’re toast. When opponents raise their level of compete later in series, their core group can’t or won’t do the same and having him or JT to a lesser degree as the designated leader on the team is the exact opposite of the type of leadership that wins cups. Never pissed off barking at opponents or refs or the other team’s coaches. Just nothing. It would be brutal to watch that from the bench.

So it seems like that supports his claim. He's about a 20th overall player in the playoffs just looking at offense. But considering goalies like Hellebuyck and elite d-men, he might be outside the top 20.

Every time I see Sam Bennett score a playoff goal I am reminded by what Zeke said about him when the Flames made him available and many Leafs fans wanted to acquire him because he was better in the playoffs than in the regular season. Zeke said "Sam Bennett is bad at hockey". Since then he tucked his tail between his legs and has never been heard from again.

Sam Bennet is the type of player the Leafs lack and might help our 3 frauds play an inch taller if he wants to come home.
There are still posters who want no part of him. They’d rather keep Marner for millions more. Clueless.

I remember when he said this. This comment was what got me to put him on my ignore list.

Getting Nick Foligno over Bennett was tough at the time. Calgary was giving Bennett away for free. Bennett was heavily under utilized by Darryl Sutter in Calgary

And he is playing for a team that Rantanen and Marner wanted no part of and for less money. What a moron. He needs some serious mentoring from our 3 super, duper, elite forwards.

Sebastian Aho also wanted out of Carolina.. remember he signed an offer sheet with the Montreal Canadiens that Carolina matched!

Zeke was wrong here, and a few other times.

But I miss Zeke

Canes are cheap so he used it as leverage. He hated it so much that he resigned for 8 years at 9.75m. Still $1m less than what Marner got as an RFA 6 years ago. Bargain but nothing like the Slavin contract.

Hard to compete with teams that have their stars on sweet deals while your stars extort you for every red cent and then shit their pants when they play for keeps.

Good riddance Zeke was a pain in the ass. I will never forget when him and sticky111 spent a whole year arguing with me because I said that Timothy Liljegren would amount to nothing significant for this organization. He didn’t have the tools, the signs were there from early. Zeke would tell me how wrong I was…

He was opiniated for sure. Possibly unrelenting.

But he kept conversation going during the dry parts of the season.
