Player Discussion Auston Matthews (Captain Edition)

Matthews should put a Sens jersey on, 2 assists last night for the Sens. NO remorse either, he has F u money and acts like it. Id sacrafice a game 6 loss , to see Berube lose his shit on Matthews and throw hands at that entitled, arrogant prick who wants Gretzky money.

They both have full No-Moves, yep.

But I don't really put much stock into that - players with full NMCs get moved all the time. Where there's a will, there's a way. The Rangers with literally anybody, and the Canucks with JT Miller all come to mind.

Even Rantanen had a modified NTC
Marner did too and look how that went. I don’t see this management group forcing players out. They don’t have the balls.

I'm so terribly disappointed in Auston, wow man. Since the first chance he got, he's milked this team for every penny, never signing long term in order to get back to the table as soon as possible. Every other star in the league signed for the max 8 year extension. We've conceded to his every whim, even gave him the C when by the eye test he is not a leader.

His performance in the 4 Nations was not a fluke, it's what we see every spring...it's now his legacy. As I've said before, I'll be happy to eat crow when he shows up and delivers a signature, series defining moment. Almost a decade in and he's never delivered. What a letdown.
He was pretty damn good in the gold medal game.

I would love to see him play with that intensity and desire for the Leafs.

He still missed the huge chance in OT, but he was their best player that game.

One time tomorrow to prove us all wrong, and then build on it the next series.

Define toxic ?

1) 6-3 225 plays like Gary Coleman
2) close out games, vanishes
3) Any type of push back, vanishes
4) Team with grit, vanishes
5) Contract time, pay me like Mcdavid
6) Voted best dressed player in the league by his peers. Bobby Baun’s rolling over in his grave.

He’s still got PTSD from that Four Nations final. Had three opportunities in OT that he should have buried. Looked like playoff Matthews to me.

I agree with you.

Even as a fan of Marner, I said at the time that by not exploring what the market was like for Mitch and at least exploring the idea of a trade, it was a massive dereliction of Treliving's duty as the team's GM.

They were way too scared about the word getting out and Marner's feelings getting hurt and his camp getting irritated, when they should have been focusing exclusively on what makes the Maple Leafs bette.

Matthews is a fraud. Straight up! He’s a f***ing fraud. Other than some individual awards WTF has this guy done to elevate this franchise??? Every f***ing big moment/game/situation he either shrinks or disappears. Last night was an abomination of a game from him just a putrid effort. People are going to say “well he might be injured” ok then don’t play!! If you’re putting the gear on and the sweater and you’re snapping sticks on the bench I assume you’re healthy enough to perform. Why the hell did we take the C away from Tavares again? I’m at the point where I may not even watch tomorrow. And I sure as hell am not watching game 7. I’m not putting myself through that again.

I don’t feel like watching either because the emotional and time investment is just better spent on things that don’t make you extremely frustrated in your time off, that you have no control over. These guys are just too punishing of their fans in their complete and uttter failure.

What saves this core at this point?

Certainly not just getting by Ott. Will it take beating Fla? Is that enough?

Or is it Finals or bust to take the bad taste out of everyone's mouth?

My friend, I feel like I don’t even have defined expectations and I’m still disappointed. It’s that bad. It’s a compounding of an entire era’s frustration.

Nothing saves this core other then this core. They have been through multiple coaches, GM's, rosters and a organization that has went all in multiple times around them. It is 100% fully on them if they ever want to shake their well earned reputation and it is nobody else's fault that they have it but theirs

If they lose this series I’d seriously consider approaching him about a trade.

This is what I cooked up:

TML
AM

Seattle
Berniers
Wright
2026 1st

Berniers had a down year after signing his 6 year deal but he is another big C. Wright is a hometown kid and can fill that two C role. We also recoup another 1st. Both are NHL ready and would fit right in if we decide to sign Marner and JT. We would also save about 5 million per year for this year and next I believe with wright still under his ELC.

Someone on Twitter tweeted out that Matthews seems like a guy who played a lot of hockey growing up but didn’t watch it. That feels like an apt description to me. Watching him compared to his peers in McDavid, Draisaitl, MacKinnon, Pastrnak, both Tkachuks, and the rest, it’s clear he doesn’t have that hate to lose extra gear. He wilts, he fades, he crumbles.

It’s very sad that it’s come to this. The guy is 27 years old. He’s a man now and in his prime. He should he taking this team on his back and doing what McDavid and Draisaitl are doing in their series.

Just a pathetic display for what is the highest paid hockey player in the world
The sad thing is at 28 it’s as good as he will ever be very very few players best seasons are after age 26

I still watch sports, a pretty good amount of sports.

Compared to 10-20 years ago, a little less hockey, a lot less football, and baseball and NBA I'm down to almost nothing. Why?
Many reasons, but 2 main ones: I haven't really seen anything new that I haven't seen in the past. No goal that I never saw, no one handed catch for a TD that I haven't seen something similar to...no comeback that is unlike anything I have seen. Not much new.
The other reason is related to what you said....The "ups" aren't as good as the "downs" are bad. And the sports world/fans have pushed the narative for SO long that ALL that matters is the cup...the VL trophy, being at the top of the league..and only ONE out of 32 (or so) teams gets to be that each year. Its just not worth the emotional investment, let alone the monetary one.

When the teams I like are playing well I'll watch...but as soon as they play poorly I tend to walk away, turn the channel, find something else to do..etc. Does that make me a 'fair weather fan'? Well, yep, it does, but i'm happier that way.

Hes the one guy in the core that's likely not 100% healthy, but it still doesn't excuse his attitude and his poor in game decision making.

Like a few others in the core, he's too nervous when the games get tight and just doesn't have that dog in him when it comes to killer instinct.

I'd love for him to prove me wrong though

Wyatt Johnston is who I would be targeting from Dallas. Local boy as well.

Seattle would do that in a heartbeat...we need more than that.

We need to calm down. Panthers are not what they were either.

Beat the Sens, take it one day at a time they can beat the Panthers. This is a good team. We all believed in them 2 games ago. Nothing has changed aside from the media and leaf trolls getting our fanbase fired up for clicks
