Player Discussion Auston Matthews (Captain Edition)

And then McDavid scored the winner even though the last game wasn't his best.

It's embarrassing when people compare those two. McDavid is in a different League. His play when the stakes are high is infinity better than Auston's.

People should stop comparing Matthews to Ovechkin as well. One guy is the greatest goal scorer ever and a top ten to 15 player all-time and the other does silly commercials.

Matthews seems to always be the second best center in whatever matchup he finds himself in, like all of a sudden it's Isaiah Thomas vs Michael Jordan against Tim f***in' Stutzle or Shane Pinto. Like he's emotionally and physically unable to better than the other guy.

They said surgical intervention would not have done anything for the injury.

Notice they've never said what his injuries actually are so you can never question how it's managed or mismanaged, what he prioritizes over the Toronto Maple Leafs, and he can always hide behind something when things go wrong on the ice? Always some built in BS with that guy.

It seems there's always a reason he can't score goals in the playoffs.

Sure, he can't shoot like normal, but he still scored 30+ goals. You know he buries those chances he hit the post on in the last two games in November.

Notice how most Top 6 NHLers are still able to routinely score random goals and control their emotions and stage fright around the net without having the best shot in the game? Auston is just wired wrong.

He's average speed, average dekes, average physicality, average playmaker.

Basically a good player without his elite shot.

He's a 5 tool player with no heart. If you ever questioned if intangibles were real, you just have to look at AM34's career to see what having every advantage but no heart looks like on the ice at the first sign of pressure.

I was always in favour of giving Matthews the C, if only for the reason of knowing whether he's worth it or not. He has two games left to pull a rabbit out of his hat, but we're all raging in this thread because we know in our Leafs hearts (from experience) that it's not going to happen.

What a waste. Keep Knies and trade everyone else, the Kessel years were more fun than this.

Then we’re cooked. We’re paying him to be the best goal scorer in the world and he’s looked like a shell of himself all season. If THIS is the Matthews we can expect going forward and there’s no surgery to fix his issue then you can close the curtain on this era. We weren’t doing anything with Matthews before this issue. Forget contending with him like this.

Yeah I think where you watch Knies, you’re just reminded how little heart and courage Matthews has. I’d build around Knies and forget the rest.

At least the Kessel years the team was bad and you knew it was bad. Anything we did was overachieving.

I can't deal with this underachieving anymore.

I'd rather miss the playoffs with Knies and a bunch of picks + rookies. Besides if we lose to Ottawa, I think we're all going to have a collective hockey hangover/amnesia.

We’re just paying Matthews for the privilege of paying him.

The Leafs don't have many draft picks until the 2028 cycle. So not much to gain internally from missing the playoffs

Matty is finished, in retrospect he probably always was. This thing is over.

If a rose can bloom in the concrete jungle...the only upside left is a three team deal should McD not give the Oilers the guarantee they need this offseason.

I think he blew his wrist up ripping too many pucks top titty. That amount of torque over the years takes its toll.
