Player Discussion Auston Matthews (Captain Edition)

He wasn’t that lights out in that Tampa series in 2023. Had a slow start to the first 3 games and I think exploded in the second half of Game 3 on the road in a comeback win and was great in Game 6. But the compare and contrast is what McDrai are doing in Edmonton on a nightly basis. This week of playoff hockey for Draisaitl and McDavid would be like the best week of playoffs Matthews has ever had in his whole career.

The best offensive players ever in the playoffs are not their comparison, nor should they be as actual two-way players who don’t trade chances and cheat for offense at every turn.

He picked Joe Thornton as his "mentor", enough said.

That really does say so much about him, doesn’t it?

Heard a lot of excuses on the drive in radio about how responsible he’s been defensively (he has been good for sure), but we don’t pay you 13+ million for good defence, buddy. You gotta produce AND play good defence.

Get it done.

We aren’t paying him Guy Carbonneau money though. Crux of the problem right there.
They are paying him to win. Period. If and when they get knocked out is the reasonable time to go over whether or not he was worth his contract.

Right now he has 6 points in 4 games and hasn't been on the ice for an even strength goal against.

The PP is working and they are up 3-1.

Every complaint from years gone by has been addressed so far. Except for in a closeout game. Can he produce tonight?

Salary doesn't matter in the playoffs with the exception that if he took less, could they have added more?

Just keep winning. If they get by Ott and have to face Florida, it doesn't matter how ugly it looks as long as they win.

Winning is absolutely the most important thing and we are in good shape at this moment in this series.

But the ceiling of this team is also dictated by how much a 70 goal capable highest paid player in the game performs to his own benchmark. 75%, 80%, 90% or 100%.

Yeah if Matthews turns into Phil Danault and we win rounds that’s good. But we need him to be more than Phil Danault. This season what bugs me is we are just trying to get enough toothpaste out of the tube with AM34. We need more, not bargain with what we can have and choose between one thing or another.

Well that’s an entirely different issue, they don’t just become the best offensive players in the world which they’re nowhere close to even in the regular season just because of their contracts.

Yes! He hasn’t been on the ice for an even strength goal against. He plays hockey the right way, not just padding his stats to appease some fans or float around for a few games and become a hero at the end of another like Nylander. That type of two-way play is priceless if you ask me. And btw, I agree it would be nice to see him score the game winner in an elimination game, but let’s not lose sight of the player we have and take for granted how we have quite possibly the best two-way center in the game in the playoffs, yes even better than Barkov.

I agree in principle. Whatever the hell is going on with Matthews is now out of the Leafs control.

His shot sucks. Nothing is going to fix that now, so he has to find other ways to help the team win. Also, don't hit the post in OT and no one would even be talking about this. Haha

Just get it done right? All in his power.

Via Sportsnet:

So, what percentage of health is Matthews skating at in this series?

“Everybody’s grinding right now,” he replied. “I mean, it’s that point in the season where it’s hard, physical hockey, and you're always gonna go through different things. So, it's nothing that's abnormal."

In other words, he's playing hurt and yesterday's "rest day" was likely somewhere between "maintenance day" (code for a little banged up) and "recovery day" (yep, he's injured).

As captain I think he’s gotta stand in there thick and thin and just be a calm voice of leadership. Missing in action after a high profile OT miss isn’t really the way to do it.

Eh, ultimately right now what's matters most is keeping guys focused on the game at hand.

Its not great from an optics pov, but I don't care about that in the slightest right now. They just need to win and win whatever ways they need to

Game 5 vs Ottawa, Matthews line gives up a goal and are absolutely fried offensively. What are we doing here?

Bad culture looks like bad optics and bad optics looks like bad leadership. 2024-25 Matthews is just not cutting it.
