Auston Matthews (Captain Edition)

If he is injured, he should sit down. He is playing like a 3rd line C, with no hands, no finish. He refuses to shoot the puck. 13.25 million for that is an embarassment to himself and the team. Imagine what the bench feels when they see Matthews giving 60% effort, not shooting etc. It gives them a reason to quit too.

Matthews is just further proof that being "the best player" doesn't make you a leader nor means you should have a token letter.

There's a reason why he had never been a Captain before... He's not Captain material.
(Neither is Tavares IMO)
Neither is the popular fallback option of Reilly. The low effort that Reilly brings this year is something else. It looks like he couldn't be bothered to have some gusto except when he tries to shoot from basically the corner of the rink and has scored maybe 2x in his career from that spot. The guy in retrospect, should have been McCabe. He plays with everything he has in his toolbox every night....sigh...we messed this up...again with the picking of a captain.

That’s a defeatist mentality. Why wouldn’t we want the best or close to the best when we pay him the most money? From where I stand it looks like catching up to the likes of Mackinnon and Draisaitl are about as remote as winning the actual Stanley Cup at this rate. Be better. AM34 wanted the most in negotiations. Why shouldn’t fans want the best out of him?
It's what "he" should want, "he" doesn't seem to want it.

I think right now he's dancing with a broken leg/ankle/toe/hip.

4 goals in last 17 games.
1 was into an empty net with goalie pulled.
1 was into an empty net with the goalie halfway to the blueline.

Playing back to health seems to have been another mistake.

The injury is upper body, not lower.

God you lot are f***ing whiners
I always find it seriously ridiculous that people here act like we have any real insight into who is and isn’t a good captain. We are on the outside looking in.

We have no idea about what goes on in the closed door room.

I wonder if he was never captain (all-star game doesn't count) before because he was always playing up, and there would have been more mature players on his teams?

Actually most people here do. Some of the guys here played high level hockey or sports, worked in high level exec enviornment.
Not to mention we have watched great captains like Sundin, Gilmour and others
Not to mention we also watch other teams and their captains

Sure we are outside looking in, but it doesn't take much to figure out who gives a damn about their team and who doesn't.

You’re projecting, but you don’t know anything. The worst you can say about Matthews as captain is he left no money on the table and he needs to elevate in the playoffs. Thing is, neither of those really have much to do with his ability to be captain.

Not sure what you’re trying to get at with the some people played high level sports or work in a high level exec environment. Neither of those things matter at all to fact we aren’t in position to see how Matthews does or does not lead this team behind the scenes.

We see half the picture at best. Also most teams have a core leadership group and it’s not really necessary for the captain to be the one with the defacto highest leadership quality. In fact, I’d wager on the majority of teams they aren’t; some that guy may not even wear a letter.

Cool. That still doesn’t give you all the insight you need to judge.
Well, it's his opinion. You saying he is a good leader holds as much weight.

I do think it's telling that almost right after Canada beat the US last month, there was a thread saying he has a very poor record in elimination games.

I'm unsure if that's directly part of leadership, but it's not the most flattering association.
