Not sure how 11 points in 8 games makes you a 4th line C, but your point remains.

If he is legit unhealthy, the Leafs have to consider that going into the deadline
Hes hurt his release isnt elite.its good but not elite

Put him on LTIR and add at the deadline with the cap space. He can come back in the playoffs like Florida is doing with M. Tkachuk
He his not himself .just something slowing his release making him rush
I dunno

I hate this. If we get bounced in the first round again, people will use the excuse that Matthews is slightly off this season. The right people (i.e. Shanny) won’t be held to account once again.

If we get bounced in the first round, the right people to be held accountable are people like Auston Matthews.

I get that he’s not at 100%, it’s not a Hart caliber season, expectations have been dropping steadily, but there are things in his control and his flat energy levels, low emotional investment can also improve.

9th year in the league, a track record that’s basically the no name Minnesota Wild. That’s his track record as much as it is Shanny’s. Shanny has put his faith into this group and this captain. Get going!

This is so confusing.....

If Matthews is injured, then LTIR him, Leafs record without Matthews is pretty good.
If Matthews is not injured, but just playing terribly, then trade him to recover assets because we can't have his cap hit with this level of play if we want to win....

Main thing I hate is the lack of emotion and intensity from Matthews. You are wearing the C now bud. He's looked disinterested all season. Maybe Marner told him this is his last year here and Matthews is thinking of asking out

His emotional energy level is really off these days. Doesn’t even seem like a Toronto problem but more like do you still enjoy the sport?

He looks withdrawn in the face all the time like he has some sort of IBS or Chrons disease or issue that wears his energy down.

Look under his eyes, he doesn't look like a fully healthy guy right now. If he were my friend I would be asking how he is feeling and why he looks so worn out lately.

Possible the consistent losing has weighed on him. I thought Matthews in the finals of four nations was the Matthews of old. Havn't seen that effort or energy from him as a Leaf this season.

But also he is part of the cause of that. He took every penny he could and hasn't shown up for us in big games enough. Just seems like he has a shit attitude

So your statement is that, for the 4 Nations only, it was the Matthews of old. And in the 46 games he's played as a Leaf this season he hasn't shown up, looks disinterested, and generally doesn't care.

Oh sorry, and he took 'every penny' and has decided not to give a crap.

Yeah the league is going to let us LTIR a guy that’s healthy enough to play 20 minutes a night.

Do you feel like we’ve gotten good or full value out of Matthews this season?

When he’s asked about the disappointment of the Four Nations loss does he give any indication he’s actually roaring to go to win a Stanley Cup for the Maple Leafs and that’s where the real fun starts?

And he’s massively energized and passionate about his day job? Does breaking the Sittler 2nd place franchise goal total give him “chills” how much of an all-time Leaf he is?

I don’t feel that connection this year.

It’s a combination of him being injured and him going through the motions till playoff time.

He probably is wishing he can fast forward to the playoffs.

My take on Matthews is that he doesn’t handle pressure well. He’s obviously a natural goal scorer and when on, a 200 foot players but to me he’s not a clutch player in the biggest moments. His record in game sevens and his inability to score in the Four Nations Final exemplify that. I also think the captaincy is weighing him down this season because it adds to the pressure as does being the league’s highest paid player. For a superstar to have as little playoff success as he and the rest of the teams core have had must weigh him down. It’s certainly a talking point throughout the league and failing in front of a huge US audience at the Four Nations might be taking an additional toll on him. None of the above is a valid excuse for him not getting it done when it counts. It might be that he’s just not the guy who will to rise to the occasion when he’s the one being most counted on.

Matthews was the best forward for the US in the 4 Nations final, along with Brady Tkachuk. I reject the notion outright. He’s also known to be injured.

Reject all you want. When a goal scorer doesn’t score when it counts. There’s a reason.

Yeah, it’s called he was injured. He setup the two goals that got them to overtime at all, so he’s the least of the Americans issues in that game. And also, Matthews has been struggling to score all year due to health issues, so why would it be any different at the 4 Nations?

Why has he never scored a goal in a game seven ? That has nothing to do with injuries. Also he should have buried one of those chances in overtime in the Four Nations. If he was playing for Canada and they lost the game he’d be getting buried up here now.

To me, this is wrong headed and the opposite of what greatness should look like.

Sidney Crosby wouldn't be Sidney Crosby if he never won anything and didn't score that OT winner vs USA at the 2010 Olympics. You want the legendary status you have to actually do those things and take people on a winning emotional journey, have those breakthrough moments, not point to the 2 assists and all you did just to lose it.

His compete level in the highest pressure moments is just not good enough.

Also, he's defensive lapses are frustrating. That missed coverage on McDavid during 4 nations....

I mean it's not a big deal if your cap hit was lower, but he's the highest paid player in the league this year....

It's disappointment in wanting to see him compete in that Draisaitl, Kucherov, Mackinnon level of players, armed with the biggest contract in the game and the Leafs captaincy foisted upon him, cheering for the guy to just step it up, hit a brand new level like never before... and he's tied with Brandon Hagel with a 1.13 PPG, while playing significantly fewer games, while trailing Hagel +29 to +4 on the meaningless plus minus while getting so much hype for defensive work.

This resonates, unfortunately. You can see the tension in his face, hands, nody language. I can read this in him, when the going gets tough. For him, it's not just the big game 7s - it's any moment the game gets rough, gets dire, requires a tie goal or winning goal, OTs even.. all of it.
He needs the Sports Psychology department to toughen him up a bit, since he doesn't come by it organically.
