Player Discussion Auston Matthews (Captain Edition)

I'm surprised he wants to play in games he doesn't get paid. Or is there money involved I personally don't care about this tourney.

Not living up to the captaincy or the highest paid player in the game tag, and on many nights it doesn’t look like that bothers him one bit.
He may be the least likeable star in the league, and the least likeably Leaf's captain in my memory.

Nothing there to really hate, he is a great player, But nothing really draws me (and apparently a lot of other fans) to him other than his pure stats and numbers.

Are you kidding me? I love the guy, he is pretty awesome. I have seen what he does when not with MM and know if he has to work to win he will.

Marner makes some player around him very lazy!

Great honour.
I'm sure the narratives are ready though.

He dominates = see, he only shows up for team USA!
He struggles = see, he's not a leader!
Personally, I think US fans on these boards that constantly shit on him are going to love him during the tournament and will then go back to begrudgingly hating him.

Surprised Quinn Hughes doesn't get a letter?

If he gets injured, he's never gonna live it down. The famous lose lose lose situation.

As far as a top tier franchise player goes Matty leaves you wanting, but as a 1C in that category there's not much you can do about it short of swapping for a McDavid, which I think is a real possibility.
The issue with signing McDavid as a free agent when his contract is up with Edmonton:
He'll be 30 when he signs that deal, and you are likely to have him from age 30-36 or 37 at least. I'm not saying to not sign him if its a possiblility but I think current AM is better than what you will get from CM at ages 30+.

No, not kidding you at all.

I didn't say there aren't some fans that don't love him. I'm saying on this message board, there are a LOT of fans who like him a lot less than what you would think someone with his production would get.

Matty needs to play with players that make him work. He is happy to do it but they want him to play lazy with MM it seems.

But that's part of being a winner, showing it when you need to.

If not iron-clad consistently (like a Tom Brady or Michael Jordan which is impossible for just about everybody but those two), at least once when it mattered. He's had how many series/elimination games in his career where he could've just taken over as he's capable and failed? All of them?
I guess when he scored 5 in 7 against Bos the second time, then the 4 goals in 9 points against TB the series they lost, plus the 5 goals in 6 games against TB the year they won.

Those are all big numbers.

Needed more out of him the Mon, Col, and Fla series for sure.

I don't really count the Was series and he was a rookie, and last year he was injured and missed half.

Individually he has done a lot to help the Leafs win and the fault doesn't lie solely on his shoulders.

Collectively they have not done enough.

Matty is only eight months younger so not much age difference with a swap.

This upcoming offseason is as likely as free agency - ideally Oilers flop in the first round. If the Oilers get ahead of it, could look something like McD waives for TO, Matty waives for LA, all three teams figure it out.

Don't know what the US made him Captain for. Man has won diddly-squat and has been Captain of his NHL team for not even half a year. Though looking at the US roster no one else really screams Captain material in the same way Crosby does.

32 games have captains and more than 80% have never won. Not a prerequisite

He's the face of US hockey.

Mogilny with a busted hip, older Roberts and god knows who else were the best we did for him as wingers.

Guy scored clutch goals in overtimes etc

Those Leaf teams had good depth, workman like effort and elite goaltending but the blueline was thin and lacked elite talent for Sundin on the wings.

Sundin is still the far superior performer in high stake moments compared to Matthews. Sundin also has a gold medal in the Olympics, I don't think Matthews has been on a team that has won an single thing at any notable level.

Meh, Sundin always left me wanting as a Leaf. Their best run was when he was hurt and Roberts and McCauley of all people went beast mode. He sure looked good for Sweden though.

So far Matthews is even worse. Underachieving compared to his talent by a massive degree.

They made it to the final 4 twice with Quinn, he scored that big goal to force overtime, unfortunately didn't take it.

Also kept kicking Ottawa's ass...routinely won a round which was nice...the Matthews era's Cup is that round 1 win vs Tampa, only to get stomped by Florida.
