What is this narrative about his wrists lol.. it exists in the confines of HF Leaf board exclusively, the guy does not have some chronic wrist condition to our knowledge, wrist surgery and banged up from a season is not the same thing.
So he wants 4 or 5x12.7m-13m? Whatever fine, I am actually ok with that. 4 years at that hit gives us enough time to see whats up with McDavid etc.Eliot Friedman just reported he believes Matthews wants to sign at a medium term at highest cap hit in the league.

Sounds like he will .. he already knows 12.6M for 8 years which is MAC's deal .. maybe some $$$ upfront which is pocket change to leafs to sweeten it up and to drop AAV a bit .. we will see but that is MAX out for Leafs .. my guess he knows already but there will be no hardball here .. if he can't get his mind around it B4 draft then he will be moved for 5 piecesMackinnon won a cup. McDavid is the greatest player of this generation. Matthews does not deserve to make more than either of them.
I get that the cap increases, and they go by % as well, but if Matthews is serious he needs to leave some on the table and not handcuff us moving forward.
11.5-13 max is what it should be. He didn't score another 60 and scored nothing in the 2nd round, he cannot ask for the moon here.
He needs to be like Rielly, if he truly loves his teammates, well leave some on the table for them to also re-sign at a small discount and when Tavares comes up we use that extra 7-8 million from signing him back at 3-4 to add another difference maker on the back end.
I want none of the Tavares shit in this town ever again.
Then the only thing he cares about is “being the highest cap hit in the league” these guys just don’t get it.
His wrist injuries more than anything scare me to death. He was basically a middle of the pack # 1 centre this year in the regular season.I have two opinions here, that Matthews is too talented of a player to walk away from, you will lose any realistic trade by default, and that I'm uncomfortable giving $15Mx8 to a shooter with chronic wrist issues who's already stopped shooting the puck in the manner that made his career.

I still want none of it. The only role he can play is a 4th liner and he can get paid like a 4th liner 750k. He is beyond useless if not for the PP production. So if he wants league minimum keep in as an option but if wants anything more he can kiss my ass and count it as that payment. That really depends, he'll only be 34 when his contract ends, if he accepts a low cap hit to play out the rest of his career, he may be a good option as a third line winger that could capitalize against lower tier opponents.
Am I the only one who thinks a 5 year term is optimal?
The 5 year term would take him just at 31 of age.
He will play out his prime years in Toronto before his play degrades like Tavares.

If he wants 13+m I'd trade him. I am also trading Marner and Nylander. f*** these losers. They promised the world and delivered nothing. Go lose somewhere else FFS.If he wants 15-16 million a year at only 5 years I'd honestly trade him. A hard line needs to be drawn in the sand fairly soon that we aren't playing this crap anymore, he's not done enough to deserve it. I mean McDavid locked in longer a year before for less and now Matthews is going to make more than him on his next contract.
Stop being greedy. We want dudes who want to WIN like RIELLY that understand you need some flexibility to make a great team.
5x15? or 13 x 8 ?Am I the only one who thinks a 5 year term is optimal?

Perhaps I am mistaken, I thought there is chart that illustrates that players historically tend begin their drop in performance at age 29? It could be baseball . But I thought it was hockey. Most players don't decline as bad as Tavares. Stamkos for example is still really good.
Being a bad skater means the decline in the 30s is even more brutal.

I can pull about dozens of quotes of pending UFAs saying the same thing that ended up leaving. We should be able to smell a rat from the Tavares saga.
He's a UFA?
