4+ games (also preliminaries) into the tournament and attendance has been rather disappointing so far.

Official attendance figures:

Finland vs. U.S. (Bell Centre) : 8,006

Canada vs. Slovakia (Bell Centre) : 14,142

Slovakia vs. Finland (Bell Centre) : 6,007

Canada vs. Germany (Bell Centre) : 12,733

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Russia vs. Denmark (Air Canada Centre) : 12,412

Sweden vs. Czech Republic (Air Canada Centre) : 13,077

Sweden vs. Denmark (Air Canada Centre) : 13,018

Czech Republic vs. Switzerland (Air Canada Centre) : 12,926

I know a lot of the ticket prices are way out of whack but it's still rather shocking to see a Team Canada game in Canada's second largest city go 6000+ under a sell out.

What does this bode for the rest of the tournament as well as the IIHF's decision to have so many future tournaments in Canada? Is the hype train slowly rolling to a halt? Is Montreal not the right market for these games? Will Hockey Canada have to adjust for the next Montreal/Toronto tourney in 2017?

Curious to hear your thoughts.

For me the most shocking part of that is that the next game was Toronto. In Buffalo and Ottawa, the games before Canada games were always packed, no matter who was playing.

MTL needs to get their **** together.

It's a price-related issue, these tickets cost more than those for NHL matches while the level of play itself is a lot lower.

There will be future tournaments in Canada, but Hockey Canada will have to scale back a degree or 3. Their goal of a 30 million dollar profit was unrealistic. They better rethink their strategy for Toronto/Montreal 2017.. I doubt it gets moved to another local, but I would be considering it if I were one of the bureaucrats at HC...

I am happy to see Canadian hockey fans giving the fine folks at HC the a swift kick in their jewel box.

I would like to see us go back to having this hosted at small venues again, but that's a pipe dream.

2015 in Toronto/Hamilton and 2017 in Montreal/Quebec City would have been better.

Hockey Canada got greedy. No other way to look at it.

The Toronto attendance is fair, those aren't even prime tournament games and still had a decent crowd. You can't really expect Czech-Swe or Russia-Denmark to sell out. The Canada game is a disappointment for sure. 2017 the prices will have to be lower.

If the tickets are overpriced then it really sad, why the greed? Better to pack the barn to human prices.

Why do we need to get our **** together? The organizers thought they could charge pro prices for junior hockey and our city was wise enough to say **** you. Put the juniors in a small town where there is no competition for hard earned dollars. That **** will never fly here.

Every year, Hockey Canada's holding of the WJR's got bigger and bigger and the profits grew and grew - Calgary/Edmonton was a huge success. It was inevitable that they would build a bridge too far.

Toronto/Hamilton in 2015 would have resulted in sold out packages for all games.

Eva disagrees but, with 3 years notice, I also believe Montreal/Quebec City would have been sold out as well.

When they first announced Toronto/Montreal, I was left scratching my head - like many of us were. Hockey Canada shot themselves in the foot by getting greedy.

What are the prices for a game involving Canada? Am I right in assuming tickets for non-Canadian games are cheaper?

Montreal/Toronto sounds good I'm theory but Hockey Canada really just tried a cash grab with it being in Toronto/Montreal. They are basically charging medal round prices for round robin games. While i would love all the Team Canada games would sell out at the same time I'm glad they are not since Hockey Canada needs a reality check with their pricing.

The IIHF would need to step in. No host country should be making a substantial profit at the expense of an amateur tournament (IMO). A marginal profit or even break even is respectable (i.e. just not as a loss).

But to hear that Canada is expecting a 30 million profit is gross to me. Why should they (Canada) get that kind of money for a two week tourny of amateur hockey players. Making a little bit of profit is fine.

I remember going to Leksand (SWE) for the WJHC and the tix price to get in even for the gold medal game was less cheap and the venues were small (13K capacity).

What a travisty if its just a money grab.

While a prelimenary game, the USA - Finland game should have been packed. You have the reigning champs against an expected medalist finalist team. To watch that and see the lower bowl nearly empty was a complete disgrace. I have been to both prague and sweden and that would never be the case. Shame on Hockey Canada.

I agree with you. The atmosphere is always great in those games like in 2010. Hopefully after Montreal/Toronto Hockey Canada goes back to the smaller markets but it's doubtful.

Yes. This tournament needs to have a return to its roots - even if it is only for a year. Something small. Price it so it is accessible to everyone. Rebuild the demand.

I went to the 2011 Tournament in Buffalo and I had the time of my life. I would love to go again but I would never pay the current prices. It is not worth it when I can sit at home and watch it on my big HD TV.

The profit from Edmonton/Calgary 2012 was 20 million... Hockey Canada set its sights on shattering the record... they failed...and they failed because of greed and stupidity.

I know when Vancouver hosted it. Games were played in smaller cities with smaller rinks (kelowna and kamloops).

If they want to have huge hubs host the medal rounds for the $$$ bring the tournaments back to the small communities it belongs in.

It's too commercial and NHL cities hosting it kills the buzz since they always have high quality NHL action to watch. Junior cities already embrace junior hockey and most of the time this tournament is a step up from the chl and people want to be exposed to the highest level hockey.

Unfortunately this isn't going to happen. It'll just continue to go to Canadian cities with NHL teams because of the potential to put more butts at the games but Finland-USA was an insanely low number for the defending champs and some of the best prospects for next draft. People should have been out in droves to see that. I realize there is a price point and HC seems to have got this wrong too, but it's pretty embarrassing. You're not going to get into these games for the $18-25 bucks it may cost to see major junior.

God no.

When I went in 2011, Buffalo charged $30/ticket for the ticket package. It was well worth it. I think Edmonton/Calgary averaged $50 for the ticket package. Isn't the Toronto/Montreal package in the $80-$100+/range? That is a bargain for a Canadian game but not if you have to buy tickets to every game.

The price for packages is beyond ridiculous. I got a couple tickets for yesterday's Sweden/Czech game, face value was $45 a piece. If I want to go see Canada I have to be prepared to pay at least $150 a ticket, and that's in the round robin.
