LEAFS GDT Atlantic Division - Race to the 1st

I’m guessing you weren’t around for the Blue Jays 1987 collapse against the Tigers. The Blue Jays gave up a 31/2 game lead with seven to go and lost 3 in a row to the Tigers in the final series of the season to miss the playoffs. Older Toronto fans have more PTSD to overcome.
I've been around since a lot earlier than 1987, but if you have to reach that far back to find the exception, that pretty much says it all.

1st time all season the score was 0-0 after the 1st 2 periods for the Leafs eh?
What a time to have that happen given this team's struggles scoring in the playoffs lol.

So Leafs are guaranteed home ice in the first round (either 1 or 2 seed in Atlantic). Florida can't pass the Leafs as Leafs have the tiebreakers even if Panthers win out (if Panthers finish with 102 points).

So to win the division against the Lightning:

If Leafs go 1-2-0 and Bolts go 3-0-0, Leafs and Bolts would finish with 104 points. Bolts would win on tiebreakers unless they win 2 of their 3 in OT/SO. Bolts also play Panthers in one of our their final 3 games.

If Leafs go 1-1-1, Leafs clinch division (105 points) as Tampa can't catch them.

Regarding playoff opponents, we're now down to 2 teams we can face in the first round. It will either be Florida or Ottawa. There's no way we can play Tampa in the first round. For the Wild Cards, Montreal cannot pass Ottawa on tiebreakers now, but Ottawa could pass Florida if they win out in regulation (and Florida loses out in regulation in their last two games).

From what I can see, we could play both Ottawa or Florida either as (1 vs. WC1) or (2 vs. 3).

It’s highly improbable at this point that we don’t know all 4 Eastern matchups

Washington vs Montreal
Toronto vs Ottawa
Tampa Bay vs Florida
Carolina vs New Jersey

Most Panters can do is tie?

Aren't Leafs home team for first round now?

If they fall to 2nd., they have at least equal RW and more ROW with the Panthers.

Tomorrow, If we win in Carolina no matter how ( in regulation, overtime, shootout) and the lightning loses to buffalo at home, we clinch a division title for only the third time since 2000.

In 1999-2000 the leafs won the northeast division ( buffalo, Ottawa, Boston, Montreal) with 45 wins and 100 points in 82 games played. They finished 3rd in the Eastern Conference. They eliminated the Senators in round 1 but lost to the eventual champions Devils in round 2.

In the bubble Covid season of 2021, tge leafs won the all-Canadian north division with 77 points in 56 games played. They lost in round 1 to the Canadiens who went all the way to the cup final but lost in 5 games to defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning who repeated as Stanley cup champions again.

Why are ppl still talking about this. The leafs have clinched the division since about month ago. My guess is due to a lsck of understanding about statistics and probability.

Probably the same ppl who don't think Marner is the best player on the team.

Because the first rule of being a Leafs fan is to always assume the worst, even in the face of very obvious statistics.

Didn't we at one point leading a Series clinching playoffs game 4-1 with like a 90% probability to win and ended up losing that game and the Series.
