LEAFS GDT Atlantic Division - Race to the 1st

Leafs are up to 8th in the TSN Power Rankings.

Up four spots, from 12th to eighth, are the Toronto Maple Leafs. It looks like our model is finally coming around on this Leafs team. All season, our model has ranked them lower than where they sit in the standings, largely due to underlying numbers that are not as positive as their overall record.

But the Leafs have won four straight games and are closing in on a division title. Our model gives the Leafs an 80 per cent chance of finishing first in the Atlantic and a 62 per cent chance of facing the Ottawa Senators in the first round. The next four games will be a good test for the Leafs who visit Florida and Tampa Bay before facing the Canadiens and Hurricanes on back-to-back days this weekend.

Exactly.

Though I feel a little bit better knowing that the playoff teams are pretty much set at this point, it's just the seedings up for grabs.

That means no team will be playing life-or-death hockey right up to game 82 - essentially playing with playoff-level intensity, which makes for a tough opponent in round one. So if, ideally, the Leafs snag the division early I'm all for resting a few players.

But until then I want to see them competing for the #1 spot, even if they personally feel the division title isn't all that important. It is, for this group at least: It would be only the 3rd thing they've won in 9 seasons (The North division & beating the Bolts), so build on it.

"That means no team will be playing life-or-death hockey right up to game 82"

Dunno, Rangers are 6 points back with a game in hand. That could rather quickly turn into 2 points back if they win tonight (and win their game-in-hand). I feel like they'll be playing live-or-die.

Tanev seems like a good candidate, and any of the older guys that need it, along with whatever Mattys best program is.

Rielly is getting in the groove and needs more minutes with Carlo. Marner might need a game off near the end cause the schedule is tight, but I'd let him chase the hundo he's pretty durable - just don't give him the 25 min a night Keefe special.

Keep playing well, take the division. Play whomever it is. I’ll take rolling into the playoffs on a hot streak all day over tanking to cherry pick an opponent. Nobody will be easy, and you need four rounds for a cup.

There is some good money to be made with those odds. Would be smart to lay a few bucks on the Leafs and Vegas. I feel like Dallas is getting way too much respect.

Yeah for a safer option too - conference finals look like they should have great odds too.

Rangers are a pathetic group with no fight in them this year. The division likely comes down to Wednesday.
The Rangers basically shit the bed a month ago.

I think if Leafs win tomorrow... they pretty much have the division. It'll be tight but I think they really do want it this year.

The fancy stats might not be as pretty looking in some categories this year... but the eye test tells me they're willing to play together as a team and stick up for one another. That'll go a long way in the stretch run and playoffs.

The goaltending overall has been very good this season. Haven't had this in years.
