Both, Boston and Toronto don't seem to be up to there normal standards, they could be had.

Last year's team with 82 games of Larkin could do it. I have less confidence in this one. 46+8 pairing seems determined to torpedo any hopes of success this season.

I watched the Leafs and Bruins game the other night, Toronto now has a goalie and appears to be developing a different game than other seasons (Matthews was out, but still) likely due to the coach and personnel. This has lead to an higher amount of penalties called against the Leafs, so they do not always outscore their sins, as they clean that up, I suspect they may be a tougher game.

It may actually make the Leafs a better team by end of the season, we'll see if the adjustment s make a big difference.

The Bruins appear to be a bit of a mess at this stage, at least for this game, but I would suggest they are unusually "flappable" at the moment, but the season is still young, there is time for them to correct it. If they don't, they may well be on the outside looking in.

win percentage doesn't matter as much as point totals.

Red Wings are tied for 8th.
POINTS percentage is a much better measure than point totals, especially at this point of the season.

Carolina having 18 points in 11 games is not equal to New Jersey having 18 points in 15 games

That being said, I'm not particularly interested in tracking the minutiae of the playoff race with 70 games to go, so use whatever you want

I always say point totals because, even with games in hand, Red Wings have to achieve something on the ice over teams like Boston right now who have a higher point total but lower win percentage or point percentage per game. Idk, I guess it doesn't matter early, however you like looking at things.

You aren't really in the playoffs by the first two months... but you sure as heck can be out of it by then already. Separation is already begging in the league from the bottom to the bottom contender for those last playoff spots.

We've seen various goalies (Husso, Lyon, Ned, Bernie) go through hot streaks in the past few season, none of them were able to carry it for the full season. Talbot gives me a bit more confidence because he's an established starter and not a career backup.... but geez, getting badly outplayed and outshot every game is a lot to ask from a goalie. Cam would have to go full on playoff level Giggy the whole season just to get his team into the playoffs.

Might happen. Not sure it'll mean much in the long run, but also nice to get him on such a cheap contract. Certainly nice to see competent goaltending.

The Wings current way of winning is not sustainable but I do think Talbot can continue being an average to above average starter as long as we don't completely wear him out by overplaying him.

Agreed. Regardless of what happens with the skaters, I'm hopeful that Talbot/Lyon is a sustainable tandem that addresses at least this flaw from last year.
