Too much top of the rotation talent in free agency to make that deal

Chicago should wait out the FA market. I'm not saying that I'd be ok with Abreu, Wong and Casas for Crochet at all.

But if we're sitting here on February 1 and all the big arms have gone to other teams, I worry that Breslow would panic and do that or something similar.

I don't see how Crochet is that much better than Fried/Burnes that you wouldn't just sign the free agents instead of trading prospects and roster pieces. You'll have to extend Crochet since he's a UFA in two years anyway, so it's not like you've got 7 years of team control at $2.5 million.

I was okay with something around Abreu as the centerpiece but if Casas is included, it still makes no sense to me.

To be fair, the logic behind the proposal was that you could add Crochet and: 1) replace Wong with Teel at C, 2) replace Abreau with Anthony in RF and 3) move Devers to 1B and 4) then add a 3B in Free Agency (Bregman or Adames) or make a trade for a player like Bohm.

Its not a crazy idea.....and it wouldn't prevent the Sox from still going after Fried or Snell.

Boston is gonna need 2 quality starting arms........and Giolito isn't one of them.

Now, if Crochet went to Philly I'd call Chicago and see if they'd flip Bohm to us.

In theory, it works because the Sox would have the ability to backfill the holes that are created with prospects and free agents.

But the value is WAY off, in my opinion.

Abreu, Casas, and Wong combined for 5.5 WAR last season alone. Garrett Crochet has earned 5.9 WAR in his career. Crochet is also only two years from free agency, while Casas and Abreu are four years away.

I like Bohm a lot too. That same Athletic article that reference the Crochet trade, also had a proposal for Bohm going to Milwaukee for Devin Williams. As a Brewer fan, I'd do that deal in a heartbeat.

You are right. But I think there's a little apples to oranges comparison there regarding WAR, IMHO. Also, if you are dead set on keeping the "Big 4" (I hate that term BTW), you are going to have to make roster room for them at some point in time. You're gonna have to make room for Montgomery sooner, rather than later, as well.....That kid might end up being the best of the bunch.

Yeah. That hurt, but that isn't why I'd trade him for Bohm. Devin is a legit top-tier RH closer and Philly needs one.

Trevor Megill was Milwaukee's closer for most of last season while Williams was on the DL. He was really good, and if there's one thing Milwaukee does really well, its develop pitching talent. Abner Uribe is eventually gonna be Milwaukee's next stud closer. Electric stuff, but he's young and needs to work on his command.

.....its a shame we can't ever afford to keep them.

Making room for the Big Four shouldn't involve trading away good, young players for less than full value.

I think you and I have different valuations of Crochet, then. Fair enough.

I think he's a future Cy Young winner, possibly even next year, if he ends up on a decent team. I think he's gonna be every bit as good as Skubal and he's 3 years younger.

You're right, the "Big 4" sucks. Should be the "Big 5", can't be leaving Montgomery out like that ;)
