Love Flaman. He is underappreciated for what he did on those O6-hopeless Boston squads.

A true pugilist too, always great to have on the blueline in my book.

Agree about him being underrated. There's another Dman who seems to regularly get drafted ahead of Flaman and I just can't figure out why. I will go into it more when that guy gets drafted.

Three Rivers is lacking one thing on the PP to this point, and that's a bonafide stud to quarterback the man advantage from the blueline. We have shooters in place with Rocket and Bowie, so we'll add this beauty of a right handed shot to the group.

He brings tremendous skating, passing, a good shot, and calmness with the puck. His calling card throughout his career was skating and offensive IQ/flair, but did manage to become a very solid defensive presence once he got into a certain coach's system in Dallas.

He led the 1994 Rangers in regular season scoring (over Messier and Leetch), which I believe, is the only time a defensemen led his team in scoring, on the eventual SC winner. Speaking of playoffs/SC winner, he put up, as a 23 year old, 19 points in 22 games and was a +10 overall. In game 7 of the SCF, he assisted on the first 2 goals of the game for NY, with the Rags obviously prevailing 3-2.

He was fantastic for the Stars during their run to the Cup in 1999, leading the team in scoring among defensemen (13 points) and led the entire playoffs in +/- w/a +13 rating. No one was higher than +8 on the Stars roster otherwise. He also played a team leading, and whopping number, 30:16 minutes per game.

His playoff resume is strong overall with 117 points in 164 games, showing his scoring didn't fall off at all from his regular season pace.

Welcome aboard:

Sergei Zubov, D

An overview of Zubov's ability and influence on the PP:

Overpass did a wonderful study on players and special teams roles a number of years ago and this guy stands out very well, against anyone not named Orr.

His PP% usage is 8th best all time (1960-2017) and you can see the teams he played on scored 14% above the league average on the PP. You can see some of the names he's ahead of not only in terms of usage, but also output.

Here you can see a few videos that highlight Zubov's ability controlling the point, directing play with aplomb. Even when pressured he makes the smart pass. When shooting, he gets the puck on net.

Here is a great look at Zubov's awareness of where Modano is before executing a perfect no-look, spin-o-rama pass on the tape.

And finally, a really cool interview with Craig Ludwig on what is was like to play with Zubov. Says Zubov was underrated defensively and really spoke to his pinpoint passing and ability to control the PP. Plus added in some funny stories about SZ (also backs up claims that Mario forced him out of Pittsburgh) and other hockey moments

Zubov was a powerplay defenseman.
He and Coffey could wield a puck.

Only without it, he only once cracked a 3rd in Norris voting, at age 35, when an undrafted duo of forwards on his tea. were exeptional in that regard.

Gallifrey picks one of the greatest playmakers of all time who helped 3 different linemates to score over 50 goals in a season ( and helped them to increase their goalscoring a lot compared to the time they played without him ).

We are proud to welcome our 2C Adam Oates. He will be feeding Mahovlich nicely on our 2nd line and is not bad defensively either.

I'll go with Paul Thompson, LW

@ImporterExporter is up
Nice add. Inexplicably underrated on the Power Play, Maybe this is the year he'll finally get credit for it. And speaking of Power Play...

GM Vandelay doesn't need him for anything more than that. He's 3rd on the depth-chart at RD. I see him getting 5+ min of PP time, and not much more than that at Even Strength.

I was actually surprised to see that Clapper is 'meh-okay' on the man-advantage. Thought he was better than that. In light of that tepid reality, Zubov is a worthy 'in-context' pick.

Nuances of strategy when picking is a learned trade in this endeavor. The real hockey people can see and appreciate it.

Zubov in Dallas was playing 30 minutes per night in the playoffs, heavy minutes on the PP, while handling more than a passing amount of time on the kill for a defensive minded and conservative coach.

He became quite adept at playing the Soviet style of defense (high IQ, positioning, stick work,) in an NHL environment for that coach, for many years, and his ice time and situational deployment confirm it.

Zubov's greatest strength was his smoking ability. A pack a day no problem.

They don't make them like this anymore.

The video I posted of Craig Ludwig talking about Zubov speaks to that haha! Had a really funny story about Zubov smoking in the shower. Also reminisced about seeing Guy Lafleur and others smoking in the locker room when he broke into the league.

Then these guys go out and play top minutes, year over year.

Blows my mind to be honest when you see how fast the game is, especially in person.

This pick is coming live from the delivery room.

Regina Capitals select one of the biggest winners from the pre merger project C Frank Fredrickson .

He was one of the best offensive stars of his era, but could also bring shutdown ability when needed and was a playoff ace.

Congratulations!

Awesome pick too! Fredrickson is a legend in Manitoba hockey circles. He was the star of the 1920 Winnipeg Falcons team that won the first ever Olympic gold medal in ice hockey.

Now that's dedication!

Good luck to you all. Hope everything goes smoothly.

And nice pick, too.

Smoking ain't that bad for your cardio. Sure, it's not good, but people are too panicky about the whole thing.

Congrats!

Fredrickson brings a nice combo of speed and strength, as well as a reasonable two-way game. I used him as a net presence on the PP when I had him a few years back.

I'm on little sleep at this point in time, and just realized delivery room meant the baby is coming and you're not a post office worker!

Congratulations and I hope the birth is smooth and your wife and child are safe and sound!

And as others have said, dedication at its highest! "Hun, you're doing an amazing job, keep pushing, yeah just like that, perfect.....and I'll take Frank Fredrickson for my 10th round pick....yes, sorry babe, you got this, you're great...."
