ATD2025 Draft Thread

I'm friends with Art Coulter's kids and the family says that those stories were taken a bit out of context.

Apparently the reporter called him up and said he was a fan of hockey and just wanted to talk. But never once said he was a reporter during the phone call, so Art spewed off a bit and yeah, it was published.

Art Coulter was actually by all accounts a terrific human being. A lot of his issues with hockey and the NHL in his later life we're because he wanted former players taken care of better after their playing careers ended, and he wasn't happy that the NHL wasn't doing more. Art took in Bullet Joe Simpson who was down in the dumps after hockey, and got him a job at his shop in Florida selling skates and helped get him back on his feet. They stayed as great friends until Simpson passed away in the 70s.

I love that Coulter interview lol. I feel like he's one of my ATD guys...anytime I play I always have an eye on him as a RD option

Never voted a first team all star by the writers, but three times by the coaches.

I read a bit more about him recently when I was researching the 1940 Rangers. Apparently Coulter was always very free about speaking his mind. He was traded out of Chicago because he told the owner what he thought of him. Lester Patrick wasn't sure what to make of this proud, independent man in New York, and decided the best way to handle him was to make him captain.

I also read about Art's brother Tom. He was a world class track star, joined Art with the Hawks to make money to pay his university tuition, attended the University of Chicago and got a master's degree in economics, and became a captain of industry in Chicago.

Quite a career for two brothers from Winnipeg!

Here's a rare Black Hawks photo of Tom Coulter who's NHL career consisted of two games with them in 1933-34!

Making my pick from the bell center, where Canada is about to take on Sweden. I will be on the glass watching the warm-up in another hour or so.

Toe Blake - Syl Apps - Bryan Hextall Sr

Enjoy! I'm glad Sid is able to give it a go. Over this little tourney and then next year's Olympics, that'll likely be the last time 87 ever suits up for Canada before passing the torch to McD/Mac as the leaders moving forward.

We're going to add a Dman who is an ELITE PKer, and will also give us some pick flexibility going forward when rounding out our top 4 D.

Chicago selects Jacques Laperriere, D

At this time it's unclear if Laperriere or Boucher will play on the first pairing next to Earl Seibert.

EDIT: We've also just doubled our Jacques!

Good pick on Lappy. He didn't fit my team so I had to pass on him but I knew he was a mini-steal.

That's a great pick and a steal in this range, IMO. Just a very sturdy defender all-around. Probably one of the best at utilizing his reach for the poke check, and when he chose to play the body he could hit like a truck. Many quotes of him being a guy who could really control the game's pace as well. Pretty much all you can ask for in a #3 D.

The perfect center for Kariya & Selanne is a strong face-off artist, cornerman, forechecker, backchecker and esteemed skater.

Savannah has all of that and more in pivot Norm Ullman, twice NHL playoff scoring leader despite his team never winning the championship. Top 25 in the HOH project among centers, 101st overall in the top-200 HOH project.

His powerful arm strength and quick anticipation made him one of the game's toughest forecheckers and faceoff men. More often than not, Ullman would go into the corners or along the boards and emerge with the puck.

Three Rivers will round out its top 4 on the blueline with a player I've wanted to draft for years and haven't had the luck to this point.

I spent much of the past 12 hours sifting through newspaper articles (especially post career write ups, contemporary praise is mighty valuable for early era players), which coupled with the evidence put forth during the pre-merger project, make me believe, firmly, he was the best defensemen on the west coast for the better part of a decade, landing on the 1st team, PCHA AS squad 8 out of 10 years from 1912 through 1921.

Like his now partner on the top pair, he was one of the 3-4 biggest players of his era, skated extremely well, had strong offensive chops, and had a reach that made it nearly impossible to beat on the attack. Given his physical length and longer than normal stick (he used one that was 3-5 inches longer then the average player), and devastating poke check (lot of praise for his defensive game that I'm finding), he should mesh well with Dit Clapper, both verifiable 2 way presences.

I'm really looking forward to studying this HOF'er and presenting the ATD crowd w/my findings over the next few months.

Three Rivers is pleased to select:

Moose Johnson, D

Moose is one of my favourites. I believe I've drafted him two (maybe even three?) times and it would have been tempting to take him again at this point. He was a legitimate superstar level player. One of my favourite stories is told in Craig Bowlsby's book and it speaks to just how tough this man was.

The contemporary praise I've found already is pretty significant, not only peers, but writers from multiple cities, certainly paints him in that light. There are direct comparison to Hod Stuart and his longevity as a star caliber player, especially for that era, is almost unmatched.

With the 132nd overall pick (acquired by trade), Savannah selects left wing Paul Kariya, to re-unite the greatest duo of wingers I've ever seen.

Marvel at their chemistry:

was considering a Kariya • Henri Richard • Selanne line which seems like it would gel and absolutely kill with speed, only issue could be that Henri is a bit small for the role he'd need to play
