ATD2025 Draft Thread

From overpass' thread on Game 5-7s:

Kane
2009 - Hat trick in Game 6 to close out Vancouver
2010 - 10 points in 6 GP (games 5-7), including 3 points and the Cup-winning OT goal in Game 6 vs PHI
2013 - Hat trick in Game 5 with an OT goal to send home LAK, the defending champs
2013 - 2 goals in Game 5 of the Cup final vs BOS
2015 - 8 points in 3 series-winning games (Game 6 vs NSH, Game 7 vs ANA, Game 6 vs TBL)

Kucherov
- 0 points in 6 career Game 7s
- For 2020, 2021, and 2022 playoffs combined, was almost 1.5 points/game in games 1-4 (21-54-75 in 51 GP), and only 2 goals and 18 points in 20 games 5-7

Kane is also tied at 3rd all-time with 5 playoff goals in OT, behind Joe Sakic and Maurice Richard, tied with three undrafteds.

Indeed.

And it's such a small-sample size stat. 5 vs. 4 vs. 3 career goals in that game situation is a huge difference. Lucky duck.

Continuing the streak of wingers, the Regina Capitals select W Tommy Phillips .

He was a playoff machine and I think the pre merger project did a good job of highlighting his star power.
Ah, now I am sad.

Remind me to send you the quotes and stats tables I’ve compiled from his time with Kenora and Toronto.

Terrific pick, courageous. I almost picked him up last round. This is where he belongs.
Even with the pre merger project highlighting the era, the ATD is still selling guys a bit short.

I understand not taking centres because the position is so deep, but Phillips was the clear cut best winger ever pre-1920. I would argue the best winger pre-Cook and a top 20 winger all time. He was built for the playoffs.

Things take a couple years to change in the ATD. One brick at a time.

I think this is the range where Phillips belong. Maybe he can pass a few LWers, Blake, Mahovlich, Joliat, Moore, Firsov, Denneny, but it's not a slam dunk that he should.

About time.

I don't understand why people prefer Kucherov and Bathgate over this guy.
Agreed on Bathgate, but I think Kucherov's clearly passed Kane at this point. Better production against stronger leaguewide competition, produced much more with less TOI in the postseason. Kane is also about as poor defensively as it gets from a winger, and I say that as someone who likes him as a player and drafted him last year.

You really have to put a ton of weight on those game 5-7 numbers to prefer Kane IMO.

Also, I'd say that Phillips wasn't making it past my next pick, but there's probably 10 other GMs in this draft who would say the same.

I am.

In the big game, give me one Kane over two Kucherov.

Kucherov peaked in a very offensive era. Kane did those things in the playoffs when points were much harder to come by.

Problem with that is very small sample size, especially in caregories like "most ot goals". Hard to separate "clutch" from "lucky".

Talking trough some options, will pick in few hours at most. If someone wants to send us a killer trade offer to move up few spots now is the time :).

Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk selects Leon Draisaitl, C/LW.
One thing us long time ATDers (or at least me) will never fully get used to, is the speed at which the generation born in the late 80s and forward, have built their resumes. When I started up, the group born in 1975-80 or so were in their primes or just past it, and there was a real hesitation to lock them into high draft picks and roster spots, largely because by and large they aren't that good (is Chara the only one drafted so far? There are a couple of other guys wh could go soon...) So I think that set a real skepticism in us when it comes to looking at a guy who's around 30 years old, and accomplished most of what it takes to have a legendary career at this point. Heck, even Crosby and Ovechkin's generation had a "hmm, let's see where this goes" stretch in their mid 20s where Sid is injured and OVs scoring has dipped.

The mid 90s births have piled on accomplishments real fast.

If anyone is interested in trading up to pick 95, send me an offer. Don't care if it's particularly good value at this point.

Between being at my folks place for the superbowl, and not really having any idea who to pick, I'm certainly open to moving down.

But Kucherov has 167 points in 147 playoff games.
Kane 138 in 143.

Among the current players, only Crosby and Malkin are ahead of Kucherov. And he is still playing in the playoffs, and should beat Malkin in the near future.
Perhaps in a few years McDavid will overtake him if Edmonton remains competitive for another 4-5 years.

For future when we calculate clock. I sent our pick maybe 4 minutes ago and it shows that it was sent 45 mins ago. So when we measure if someone is skipped or not the timestamp is not reliable it seems.
