Three Rivers will round out its leadership group, by picking our 1st D of the draft, a legend who managed to be a 2 time AS (likely 3 if the awards had started a year earlier) as a RW during the Bill Cook/Charlie Conacher era, during his 1st 10 years in the league, then shifted back to the blueline (age 30) where he was a 4 time AS (3 1sts) and 2 time Hart finalist for Boston, repeatedly cited by peers/press as a renowned 2 way defender, one of the 3-4 largest players of his era, fast, with tremendous leadership qualities.

He was captain of the Bruins for 13 seasons and held the record for longest tenured captain for approximately 50 years (Bourque).

He was the first player to hit the 20 seasons played mark and held the record for games played until his now teammate, Rocket Richard passed him in 1957.

He was the only active player ever to be inducted into the Hall, and at the time the only living member inducted.

I can't stress enough, if you have the funds available, and a reasonable amount of free time over a 6 month period, you cannot beat newspapers.com subscription packages.

I learn something new about this great sport, every single time I log on and start researching. Incredible photos, stories, firsthand accounts that haven't been revealed, etc. etc. I'm about 2 hours into Dit Clapper and the bookmarked tab has grown significantly.

The game reports are generally incredible pre-consolidation, and even once they become more modern AP style, you see a wide expansion of opinion or analytic pieces by the greats like Dink Carroll, Vic Wall, Michael Rodden, Red Fischer, just to name a few.

I love this website so much!

Those comics and other caricatures are priceless. I regret not always saving them when I was researching a lot. Tons of those in the 1930's.

Well said! I've been a "Publisher Extra" tier subscriber for 5 years now and although it's pricy, It's totally worth it in my view. And they FINALLY added both the Montreal & Toronto Star archives awhile back, which is huge.

It's pretty much literally having access to the entirety of hockey history through the words of reporters and players/staff of the time. All on your phone for quick access and your PC for deeper dives. It's pretty much a historian's dream lol

I ended up getting a bunch of great stuff from BANQ. It really helped to fill out my early era stats and quotes. I probably need to post the updated scoring tables at some point, haha.

Tons of great stuff from French media of yesteryear that needs translating for the rest of the hockey history world. Opinion columns from Howie Morenz, for instance. He was sharp and insightful about other players.
 
Saw him live this year. His change of pace is incredible. He plays slow most of the time looks like, but players back off him because of his hands and vision. But he controls the whole game and has the puck all the time, but STILL has space.
