ATD2025 Draft Thread

I've seen this debate elsewhere. He was also known as hardworking and moved to defense late in his career, so he obviously could play defense. Dick Irvin was a h@rdass.
 
Alright, I've had a particular 1C in mind from the moment I decided to draft Guy Lafleur. Thought I could wait for him but with this run on C's, I didn't want to take the chance of him not making it to 58. A few of the teams in between picks 50 and 58 already have their 1C, but who knows..this player could've still been on someone's radar. And even if this was unnecessary, I'm considering it worth the risk to guarantee his selection.

It's a fit I think is a great one and one that I feel may have been used in the past but I'm not entirely sure as I haven't looked back. And if not, it surely should have been used, IMO.

The Mark Messier of his era, Milt was considered by Maurice Richard as the greatest center iceman he had ever played against. Tough and talented with a heavy shot and playmaking chops, Milt will run through you to make a play. xxx also considered Milt the best player in hockey when he first broke into the league.

I felt this selection doubly important as his aggressiveness and playstyle will hopefully be useful against Mario Lemieux, Sidney Crosby, Joe Sakic and Frank Nighbor who are in the division.

Schmidt - Lafleur is a duo I like a lot.

Love Schmidt. I enjoyed writing a bio for him back in 2021 when I had him center Bobby Hull.

I had more stuff on Schmidt somewhere but never found the time to consolidate it and the project fell through the cracks and lost in the mists of time.

Across the entire goalie project I must have read 1000+ game reports. I learned a lot and definitely had some preconceived notions changed. I thought this goalie was the weakest link in the "big six" of goalies who rode a sweet peak and backing up a dynasty (Bower 67). Going through game by game he was an absolute star who pushed through injuries, absent defense, and a system that tossed him to the curb. He rose more for me in absolute stock than any other goalie I read about in the project and is the clear cut best goalie remaining.

The Regina Capitals select goaltender Terry Sawchuk.


I always chalked up his post-1955 run as weak, but the game reports tell a different story. For years it was Sawchuk and Howe as the only things keeping the Red Wings in playoff games. He and Bower had the best goalie duo in NHL playoff history in 1967. Game after game. Year after year. More and more praise. The league treated him terribly, he suffered greatly, but he always played like his life depended on it.

Great pick, better "meta-value" than the other goalies taken IMO.

I'm a big fan of Sawchuk though.

To this day I hold he was the greatest free agent signing in modern history.

Completely changed and defined the Boston Bruins for ~15 years.

Three Rivers will run back their title winning goalie from last year, who just happens to also represent the best player available, IMO.

His puck handling skills are the best ever at the position (not often a single player impacts the game so much that the league adjust rules). His longevity at the position is the best ever. And he was the best player on all those title winning/contending New Jersey teams of the 90's/early 2000s.

Arguably the most ridiculous stats is that he started 70 games or more in a single season, 12 times in his career (10 in a row). Roy and Hasek combined to do this once.

His career overlapped significantly that of Roy/Hasek, along with THIRTEEN other goalies who placed in the top 50 all time in the latest goalie project. His era has the greatest peak and is the deepest of goaltending in NHL history and during this time Brodeur was:
  • 4 time Vezina winner with 5 other finalist nods.
  • 11 times he was a top 12 Hart vote getter including a 3 time finalist.
  • From age 21 to age 37 he was a top 8 in Vezina voting every year but 1, including those 4 wins above
  • He was superb on all 3 Cup winners in NJ and even pushing 40 years old in a Cup finals run (loss to LA) put up respectable numbers.
The Hart voting is what excites me the most about his regular season success. It really highlights his reputed value to not only NJ but the league itself.

Plante did win a Hart in 1962 but outside of that year, only had 1 other finish in the top 5.

Roy had 5
Hasek had 5
undrafted had 5
Sawchuk had 4

Brodeur was top 5 in Hart voting SEVEN times.

I like that a lot. Good fit! Mess, especially in his early years, is probably an ideal C for Kharlamov as he can keep up pace wise. That's a lot of speed in transition. Messier's physical game and playmaking obviously is a plus for a guy like Kharlamov as well.

I really like the fit too. I almost picked him at 53 (to ensure I got pretty much my top Messier pairing in this range), but I figured he stood a more realistic chance of making it to my next pick than Chara did. Thankfully, that's what happened.
