Great pick. It was down to Lafleur, Ovie and Makarov for me, each bringing their own unique skillsets. I think all three are in pretty much the exact same range value wise in an ATD. It's close anyways.

Yea he would wade in and give a cheapshot then run away and let the goons move in... Not minimizing the player, of course his hockey sense and vision and defense was off the charts, when he played hockey lol.

While I was really looking forward to grabbing Brad Park, the Regina Capitals are happy to reunite Bobby Hull and D Pierre Pilote. I've always wanted to bring some real life chemistry into an ATD team.

Pilote was a tremendous all-around defenseman who could give Hull the first-pass, but also rush with him in a give-and-go style. Pilote was also very strong defensively with a noted mean streak.

Not sure how others feel but I've always been a sucker for the addition of real-life chemistry on our ATD clubs. It can take a team a long way provided it's done right. Not sure what's better than actual proven chemistry when it's time for debates.

I've often looked for that chemistry as it is always a focal point in debates. How well do linemates/D pairings mesh?

With that being said, I don't know if you can really quantify how much it matters at the end of the day here. I've been ripped (early years) and to a degree, rightfully so, for taking chemistry over the better player, so I've been more judicious in making those specific types of picks.

If the talent is roughly even, I'll absolutely beat the drum for proven real life chemistry as it's pretty hard to counter, but if the gap in talent is sizable enough, most often, go with the better player.

At least that's how I think the vast majority of GM's we've had, feel.

I always assumed this was a preferable strategy in these ATDs.......so long as it made sense at the time and you weren't reaching just to meet some "real life linemates" checkbox.

Yes and no. Chemistry is great but if someone is reuniting players that never won shit in their era, it's hard to imagine them leading a championship group in the highest level of hockey ever constructed (an all-time great league). So chemistry for the sake of it doesn't always make sense, but it's certainly something that can give you an advantage if done properly. Especially if said players have proven they can win.
 
Pilote, Park, Chelios, are all fine picks here.

There are other defensemen I would rank among that group where the difference is almost a wash between them. Might as well go with the one that fits what you want to do with your team identity.

This pick gives us a top 3 player all-time at two of the most important positions in hockey, 1st line C and #1 Goalie
(I acknowledge there's an argument for Crosby as the third best C ever, but if you give him the edge over Beliveau it's at least extremely close, so my point stands)

Fantastic playmaker and relentless forechecker in the offensive zone while also being regarded as elite defensively, capable of playing big minutes on the PK, meaning he can be put put into any game situation with confidence. He was incredible in the dot and brought intimidation in an era when it was highly sought after. You put the C on his sweater and know players will rally behind him due to his effort alone.

Another 1st for me in the ATD, easily my favorite Flyer (weird saying that as a man who's entire family hails from Pittsburgh dating back over 100 years now haha) of all time, Three Rivers is proud to select:

I may be biased, but I agree 100% :D

Also, a real pain in the ass duo to play against physically speaking.

Really fantastic start HT, especially considering you picked outside the top 10. A beautiful aesthetic and historical duo.

I'm glad to see goaltenders starting to get a little more respect in recent years.
