Well, we came down to two guys that we were picking between, and we felt like we might have a little more fun with this guy, playing it how we want. So, we are happy to bring on our anchor defenseman in Red Kelly.

i always thought he was a one way player but was astonished to find out he was a defensive stud too. Doesn’t that make him one of the most underrated players in the top tier?

We're pretty happy with what we got. We had our eyes on him for a while, and I've had a feeling since pretty early on he was who we'd end up taking. And yeah, he was a good two-way guy. I think TDMM did a good job showing that in his bio, which I'm considering trying to update, btw.

I feel like this gets said by someone every year, but here goes:

Red Kelly always seems to be good value in the draft. I have him ranked slightly higher than Potvin and he usually goes well after him. Potvin is easier to build around (he checks a lot of boxes), so I understand why he goes first, but usually the gap is too big for my liking. Nice pick.

Everyone, sorry I haven't been vocal in the lead up to the draft, but I was just laid off this past Wednesday so my focus has been getting my resume updated and sent out to potential employers. I'm just now getting caught up with the picks and trade parameters. I can't guarantee that I'll be able to do much more than pick given my situation but I'll do my best to be timely.

If anyone is interested in trading up let me know.

Also, I'll run back the title team from last year, Three Rivers AC.

Hey, man, I hope everything's going as well for you as possible. I know there's only so much we can do online, but if you need something, let me know.

Sorry to hear. Best of luck in your job search.

Sorry to hear this, bud. That's never easy. Best of luck on the job search.

I said earlier I was hoping Crosby would be available at 11, well y’all have left me a hell of a consolation prize. IMO this guy is one of the easiest players to build a team around. He was said to have no weaknesses and to be able to play with anybody. He also brings elite leadership and 10 Stanley Cup rings. On top of all that, this is my 15th ATD (I think) and I’ve never drafted him!

Chicago is honored to select Jean Beliveau, C

Great pick, can't believe he fell to you. He was my original plan at 6th, I never build around him neither.

Quite the sequence of events to sign up for the draft in extremis and get JB at 11th!

Sorry to hear that, IE. Hope everything works out, I'm sure it will.

Mario’s peak is good enough to go 1. Gretzky said the same- Mario would have broken his records had he stayed healthy. This isn’t a video game where a guy is all of a sudden going to get hurt. To me it’s what he did, his peak, his pace and how good he actually was. And I don’t think anyone was ever better than Mario Lemieux. Same level for a select few, but none of them are “better”. And if you are leveling eras, they would have dealt with that back issue today in junior, and all the upgrades in tech etc. He had to play against literal criminals. These rules would be a joke for him.

Thats entirely debatable.

Don't worry about delaying the ATD or anything, we all realize that real life is more important.

Thank you everyone for the words of support and well wishes. I've been in this situation a few times now at 41 years of age and although there is a degree of anxiety of starting somewhere new, I know at the end of the day I'll be OK and will have employment soon enough. And I always try and remind myself that no matter how bad it may seem, there are millions of people in the US alone in worse situations than myself.

Also, just leaving visiting my parents, so as soon as I'm home (about 35 minutes) I'll mull over a few trade offers i have received and either go that route or have a pick entered tonight, by 10 pm EST or so.

Thank you all!

I can't recall whether I've drafted this legend in the ATD (don't believe so), but I do think he's the most important and revered Les Canadien, at least culturally, eclipsing even Beliveau. And I can honestly say I don't know if I've ever seen an athlete receive a standing ovation of nearly 10 minutes as he got in 1996. Kids today, certainly in and around Montreal, know "The Rocket."

Trois Rivieres aptly selects:

Maurice Richard, RW, Montreal

Great pick! Better value than several drafted players. Richard's stock is laughably low on Hfboards right now, but without mercy it will rise back to its historical norm.

That's the other guy we considered.

The first player I ever drafted in an ATD. Not the "easiest" to build around, but it's not nearly difficult as some make it seem.

Also, the game on the line and I can have one player in hockey history with the puck on his stick in the offensive zone? The Rocket and it ain't even close.

I don't find Richard difficult to build around at all. So many centers work well with him.

Easier to build around than Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux and Hull. They require more planning. Richard only needs a two-way playmaking center. Not exactly a scarce resource.

Thanks! That seems to happen with certain players, for stretches at least), but I think the one thing Rocket always has going for him is that he is truly revered in Montreal. Well over a half a century later he's still a staple amongst hockey fans, even the younger generations and to me, that = staying power that very few athletes can say they possess, in any sport. And he's also one of the 4-5 greatest playoff performers ever, and that means a lot to me personally in these usually tight match ups of the ATD.

You guys taking Kelly probably saved me from going a more boring route w/the build (too similar to last years team). Starting with a winger is a challenge and there are some neat paths I can go, especially with trading being part of this years draft.

Yeah, I see Richard as fairly easy to build around, given he was less puck dominant than someone like Hull if we're talking wingers. Maybe it's all a bit overblow but to me, it feels like there are a lot more C's historically who would fit well with the Rocket vs the Golden Jet.

I had Hull in 2021 & 2022, Richard in 2015 & 2024, and I definitely agree.

With Hull you got to be careful in the 2nd-5th round to pick the right center and it can be nerve-wracking because there aren't that many who looks smooth with him on a line.

Interestingly enough, he's also the first player I ever drafted, back in 2021.

My 1st rounders:

ATD2011: Gretzky + Lidstrom
ATD2012: Kelly
ATD2013: Bourque
ATD2014: Undrafted
ATD2015: Richard
ATD2016: Howe
ATD2017: Harvey
ATD2018: Shore
ATD2019: Harvey
ATD2020: Team 1: Crosby, Team 2: Undrafted
ATD2021: Hull
ATD2022: Hull
ATD2023: Did not play
ATD2024: Richard
ATD2025: Lemieux

Wayne Gretzky was the 1st player I ever drafted.

Because I did 3 repeats with Harvey, Hull & Richard, there's still many players I haven't build around.
