Ratelle- value too good to pass at this point, esp on the PP.

Three Rivers is quite happy to see him fall to this point and will select a LW who was the 3rd wheel for the famous "breadline" in NY with his brother Bill and Frank Boucher. I see a similar set up for him here.

In this case, he actually upgrades in linemates which is not easy to do (Boucher to Clarke and Bill to Rocket Richard) mitigating any argument that his 76.3 VsX score is the product of playing with superior linemates. Clarke representing a dominant 2 way C (like Boucher was) and Rocket an even better goal scoring force than Bill.

He brings all the traits you want in a complimentary grinder. Great speed, fore/back-checking, enough offense to chip in on a scoring line and he was one of the very best PK'ers of the late 20's/30's and he didn't mind mixing it up if it came to scrap.

If you enjoy reading, please take a gander at the in depth bio I did for him in 2021. There is a plethora of evidence backing the above qualities I described.

Bun Cook, LW

The top line won't be this laid back to play against, but I do like the ring of the "CCR" (Cook-Clarke-Richard) line

With my previous pick, I drafted the most prolific/best scorer of the 1890s. Now I select who I consider to have been the best forward of the 1890s.... Shirley Davidson, RW!

From the Montreal Herald, 22 January 1898 Page 6

"And before I leave hockey I must say a word about Shirley Davidson. He has at last passed out of the fascinating game of which he has been one of its greatest stars for years. On Thursday night a train pulled out of Montreal, and he was one of its passengers. By this time he is being rocked in the cradle of the deep, probably thinking of his thousands of friends in Montreal, and giving up all hopes of ever eating another meal. Hockey, football, and yachting circles will miss him badly. He has been one of their leading exponents for years, and was as much liked for his thorough sportsmanlike and gentlemanly demeanor as for the success he made at them. His departure marks the beginning of the end of the peerless team that the Victoria Hockey Club has had on the ice for the past four years. With Shirley Davidson off the forward line it will be like the play of Hamlet with Hamlet left out. With what a host of brilliant victories has his name been connected!"

From the Ottawa Journal, 1 February 1907 Page 2

"London Advertiser: It is customary these days to refer to Tom Phillips as the greatest forward Canadian hockey has ever produced. With the possible exception of Frank McGee, of Ottawa, the Kenora captain undoubtedly surpasses any other forward playing the game to-day, but old-time fans who recall the stars of a decade ago will not agree that he has anything on Shirley Davidson, Bob McDougall, UNDRAFTED or UNDRAFTED. These names are practically unknown to the younger generation of hockey followers. Davidson, who was a midget compared to Phillips, was a wonderful left wing, not showy, but always plugging, and a wonderful judge of instance and speed. His favorite play was down the rink at top speed close to the side, and caroming the puck as he was checked. McDougall was a more spectacular player, but a sensational stickhandler"

I know that quote says LW, but I have multiple game summaries showing him at RW.

I can hear about a half dozen Mike Lange catchphrases for a great like Shirley Davidson

This isn't a guy I would typically draft in an ATD but after building around The Dominator and Lafleur I decided I would do things a bit differently this year.

I'm looking for a PP weapon to pair with Shea Weber on the point, and this guy's 600+ career PP points certainly fits the bill.

He's being drafted into an ideal situation, IMO, as he'll be well insulated. He'll pair with Lionel Hitchman, who's an absolute rock defensively, on the 3rd pairing and of course he has arguably the sport's all-time greatest goaltender guarding his crease.

An absolute magician with the puck, welcome to Baltimore Phil Housley, D

Sorry for the delay.

Chicago selects "Bullet" Joe Simpson, D

Almost took him when I took Ross.

Probably the best peak left among defenders.

There's a couple of defenders that were good value in this range, including Grant, Ross and Simpson. One or two left.
