I truly hope that once Crosby and Ovechkin finally decide to hang them up, the fans can hang up any fandom animosity they still might be clinging to, and realize we all got to witness a pair of the 10 best hockey players to grace this planet (IMO, and I'm sure many others). We're going to witness Gretzky's goal record being brought down by the greatest goal scorer the NHL has ever known, in the very near future. That's incredibly significant, even as a Pittsburgh fan.
I wanted to feature this article on Sid's leadership, which I already believe to be as good as any in hockey history when you consider the longevity of captaincy, the peak/results (3 Cups, back to back Smythes, a decade of undefeated dominance at the international level, most of which he's worn the C for), and what I think most important, is the miles long testimony of peers, be it players, coaches, writers, etc, etc, regarding his work ethic and lead by example approach.
The more I've studied the history of the game, thanks to the ATD, and HOH projects, the more I appreciate greatness and while Sid/Ovi night not quite get to that top 4, legendary tier, I feel they're both firmly in that next group of all timers.
And hell, both look like they've got quite a bit left in the tank. Sid at 37 didn't look out of place whatsoever last night and is still pacing as an 85-90 point player on a really crappy team. Ovi, without the knee injury, probably makes a push at 50 goals.
We've been blessed folks.
