ATD 2024: The 20th Anniversary Edition

The all-time draft is a what-if scenario, the counterfactual reasoning tool of the academic discipline of History. The greatest players of all time, from the amateur era to the NHL to the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, WHA, etc are drafted BASED on their whole career. No peak vs. career; instead, peak and career, all considerations. A player who was injury prone will be no less so in an all-time competition.

GMs are encouraged to provide bio info like stats, quotes and/or comments when at the podium to announce their picks.

(NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS! Except Wade Belak. )

Note for new GMs:
Active players today in the 2023-2024 season are judged BASED on their career to date, meaning no projections of what he will do in the future, but instead: Imagine they suffered a freak career-ending accident the day you draft them.

The draft clock will begin Monday, February 5th at noon Eastern. The 1st round clock will be 24 hours long, dropping to 12 hours for round 2.

2). Time Limits.

24 hrs for round 1
12 for round 2
10 for rounds 3-10
8 for 11-14
6 for 15-20
4 for rest.

There will be 24 rounds, with 18 starting skaters, 2 goalies, a coach and three others for the bench. After the draft there will be votes tallied by an ex-ATDer or mod and a regular season standings list resulting. Then playoff match-ups.

Well, last year, we had him with an Apps-McDavid-Francis team, which I don't see as monumentally different and it wasn't called into question. And I think the guy's just a winner. I think he could easily take the kind of talent that we have in the ATD and win with it.

Edit: By not monumentally different, I mean that we have two centers clearly sold out to offense and one two-way guy.

Seems like people are paying more attention to coaching fit than in years prior and the group you have this year is definitely a worse fit for Green team

Usually when you pick someone with a plan for the next pick and then you get scooped and then you rethink everything and start with a new plan and worry about the conspiracy against you and you know that your pick is the best if you can just get through those newspaper articles from 1910 and prove it and then..

The Dusters select 5-time Stanley Cup champion Don Marshall, the dynasty utility player renowned as one of the best penalty killers of his era. An all star baseballer in his youth, the all-star goal-scoring center in juniors and in the IHL turned NHL defensive left winger and face-off specialist to fit on a deep Habs line-up. As an NHL rookie he scored a playoff OT goal while shorthanded, doing so again the following year on way to the first of five consecutive cups. He led the league in penalty killing scoring twice, netting 18 shorthanded goals in 8 years. In 1960 he was said to: "...fill in at any forward position and one of the league's ace defensive specialists." In 1963 he went to New York in a blockbuster trade. In a 1965 coaches poll, Marshall was the only one other than Pulford who received votes as best penalty killer in the NHL. As a Rag, he was thrice top-3 in team scoring, becoming in 1967 the 2nd team NHL all star LWer, behind Bobby Hull.

A swift skater who would never allow himself to be outworked... Marshall was extremely consistent... a defensive checker and penalty killer. His thankless work was a big part of the Habs success.

Don was pushed into the penalty-killing business and soon had the management - and fans - delighted as he refused to take the easy way by icing the puck. Instead he would hold it as long as possible and pass it to a mate (even one to the rear) when pressure got intense.

Marshall played all three positions, substituting when needed on every line, like when Richard or Geoffrion were injured, described as "the original Mr. Everything":

Coach "Toe" Blake puts it this way: "To get up and stay up, every major team must have a Marshally - he could scale peaks on one 'set' line, but we get more mileage out of him this way and Don is a team man."

"...one of the smoothest players I've ever seen. Everything about him looked casual, but he was both clever and smooth. He was strictly a finesse player, and he had great anticipation of where the puck would be. That's what made him such a great penalty killer.

That certainly was not his reputation lol. He was high octane. You are magnifying one thing. The bio seventies put together is who the player was. I've been watching hockey since 1976- I saw all those Oilers games too.

When Roenick went from being ranked #2 to #3 after 92-93 by Hockey Digest it actually wasn't even Wayne who overtook him, and this specific ranking involved a number of NHL coaches/scouts

@tabness shared it here a few years back, certainly still an argument to be made for Gretzky outperforming him, especially if we consider that Roenick's emergence as a new star coincided with Wayne technically "regressing" which likely influenced perceptions of how they were performing, especially in the immediate months following those seasons

I had already been leaning towards Roenick at this pick if he was available and seeing just how highly he was regarded helped solidify that decision, very few players left at this stage who were considered comparable to someone of Gretzky or Lemieux's caliber
