ATD 2024: The 20th Anniversary Edition

The all-time draft is a what-if scenario, the counterfactual reasoning tool of the academic discipline of History. The greatest players of all time, from the amateur era to the NHL to the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, WHA, etc are drafted BASED on their whole career. No peak vs. career; instead, peak and career, all considerations. A player who was injury prone will be no less so in an all-time competition.

GMs are encouraged to provide bio info like stats, quotes and/or comments when at the podium to announce their picks.

(NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS! Except Wade Belak. )

Note for new GMs:
Active players today in the 2023-2024 season are judged BASED on their career to date, meaning no projections of what he will do in the future, but instead: Imagine they suffered a freak career-ending accident the day you draft them.

The draft clock will begin Monday, February 5th at noon Eastern. The 1st round clock will be 24 hours long, dropping to 12 hours for round 2.

2). Time Limits.

24 hrs for round 1
12 for round 2
10 for rounds 3-10
8 for 11-14
6 for 15-20
4 for rest.

There will be 24 rounds, with 18 starting skaters, 2 goalies, a coach and three others for the bench. After the draft there will be votes tallied by an ex-ATDer or mod and a regular season standings list resulting. Then playoff match-ups.

[Hawkey Town 18]

The Dusters select Mark Messier, the 6-time Stanley Cup champion who won Hart trophies after Gretzky left, leading Edmonton to its 5th cup and the Rags of New York to its first victory in over half a century, renowned for his leadership and nastiness, drafted as a prospect ranked by Oiler scouts as having top level: speed, strength, puck handling, shot, character and family ties. When he retired, he had the 2nd most career points in NHL history.

"Bravery is not the absence of fear, but the action in the face of fear.”

Messier and Potvin always remind me of each other as far as the draft goes: very easy to build around, elite leadership, nasty and physical, both usually drafted a little higher than you would rank them in a vacuum for those reasons.

My initial response to this is that I’m not exactly sure how to feel. It’s early. Much earlier than I expected. Yet at the same time it’s not that crazy. He’s an absolutely incredible offensive talent. Accolades-wise he clearly belongs in this group and when it’s all said and done I think he retires as potentially a top 5 player ever, a surely top 10. But in an ATD setting I still wasn’t prepared for this big of a jump.

We've talked a couple times over the years about active players or even some undrafteds finally getting their due. All it takes is one GM willing to be the one to do it and suddenly that becomes their place in the ATD metagame.

Does that work out for the gm who drafted them higher than normal? Not usually, but they make a lasting impact. I wouldn't expect McDavid to fall out of the first round again.

If you were gong to make an exception to the bling rule (Cups), it would be for McDavid. If feels a bit high and premature, but maybe it's not- he's been that stellar. I just saw him twice last month and no player since Mario has made my eyes pop like that. Seeing him twice again this weekend!

We should be able to universally agree that of the players selected so far, McDavid has had the weakest supporting cast in terms of ATD caliber teammates. He has one.

It feels like 16 is too high for a guy who's almost entirely made up of regular season success and ultimately I had him pegged as an early to mid 2nd round pick (in this draft 25-35).

With that being said, he's been the best player in the world for a while now and brings some aspects that are truly unique relative to others in this general range.

His offense is incredibly good. Realistically there are only a few players left to be drafted that can get you the kind of offense he brings. The speed is a very real threat and something that most others don't possess.

There is no doubt that the Hart wins/shares, Ross wins, and general offensive dominance on a poor to average team is worthy of being a 1st rounder.

I just don't know if I'd have pulled the trigger quite that early, but I do respect the hell out of BC for making the aggressive play.

I think you need to have look at who is 55-75 of all time because McDavid is massively better.

If he had good fortune to play on teams like those drafted above him while playing at the level he’s hit the past while, he’d be coasting to Stanley Cup wins each spring.

There is always a knee jerk push back against current players, and as someone who has bumped others in the past, I expect it, but I guarantee you McDavid never falls out of the first round again. The only direction he’s going is up.

Playoff success, obviously, is something that requires a bit of good fortune. It's no secret McD has been on some really talent depraved teams, so I'm not going to hold his relative lack of depth in that regard, against him. Still, there are players with significantly more meat on the bones in that arena. Yes, most of those players played on more talented teams but I can't hold that against those guys either. I just try and judge the overall package.

There are some things to nitpick. He's not good in the dot. He's not going to bring any physicality to the rink. I'm not sure where to peg him defensively, though his calling card is obviously the offense/speed.

Again, I think the picks is certainly defensible. I would have bet a solid amount that you and rmartin were going to nab him on the turn back down in round 2, so that's like 10 picks lower than he went. Not a big gap at all.

Danault and Suzuki had a fairly easy time against him in 2020, but I think he learned from that experience- also the team around him is a lot better. The plan was to forecheck him as soon as he touched the puck before he could build up speed and the rest of the team collapsed. He wasn't able to figure that out. But he came back with a vengeance after that in the playoffs.
