ATD 2024: The 20th Anniversary Edition

The all-time draft is a what-if scenario, the counterfactual reasoning tool of the academic discipline of History. The greatest players of all time, from the amateur era to the NHL to the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, WHA, etc are drafted BASED on their whole career. No peak vs. career; instead, peak and career, all considerations. A player who was injury prone will be no less so in an all-time competition.

GMs are encouraged to provide bio info like stats, quotes and/or comments when at the podium to announce their picks.

(NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS!)

Note for new GMs:
Active players today in the 2023-2024 season are judged BASED on their career to date, meaning no projections of what he will do in the future, but instead: Imagine they suffered a freak career-ending accident the day you draft them.

The draft clock will begin Monday, February 5th at noon Eastern. The 1st round clock will be 24 hours long, dropping to 12 hours for round 2.

2). Time Limits.

24 hrs for round 1
12 for round 2
10 for rounds 3-10
8 for 11-14
6 for 15-20
4 for rest.

There will be 24 rounds, with 18 starting skaters, 2 goalies, a coach and three others for the bench. After the draft there will be votes tallied by an ex-ATDer or mod and a regular season standings list resulting. Then playoff match-ups.

Sure but unlike some other goalies selected already, Lundqvist didn't have the advantage of back stopping a dynasty...he's by no means a bad playoff performer

Not bad, but also not especially good either right?

Some of those goalies that were taken before him weren't just serviceable in front of a great team, they were clear Conn Smythe winners.

I hope you guys have a minutes chart so we can see how many minutes your coach would plan to deploy Draisaitl. It's a sexy name for the bottom line sure, but by far not as impactful as Lundqvist

10 seasons into his career, one of the best players of his era, has led the playoffs in both assists and goals, a Hart, Art Ross and Lindsay. Absolute money on the powerplay. His peak is probably higher than the majority of the players picked over the past few rounds. I know you know all this, but he’s perfectly fine as a 4th liner and a PP specialist at this point.

I’m sure we’ll have a minutes chart.

Lundqvist lost to XXX in his one Stanley Cup Finals run. His career was very good but disappointing. He is the goalie equivalent of a Marcel Dionne.

Ladies and gentlemen, we've had our shitty VanI take of the day (siren noises)

He lost to a superior LA Kings team yes, but he was the biggest reason his team made it to the Cup Finals. Dude can't also score goals for them.

Edit: Honestly if this is the biggest dig you've got at him that's great. He lost to a team has already had two ATD players drafted in Kopitar and Doughty. How many members of that 2014 Rangers team is going to get selected in this besides Lundqvist? (Hint a 38 year old Martin St. Louis won't move the needle much)

Again, part of that is opportunity which behind a meh to pretty good Rangers team he didn't get more than one shot at a cup . If that Rangers team had been good enough to win a Cup he absolutely would've been a factor in the Conn Smythe.

First, I do not at all agree with Marcel Dionne comparison.

I do remember him being good in 2014. The Rangers also finished 2nd in the East that year, so it's not like he was carrying a bad team. I just don't remember him really stealing many series in his career, and he had a lot of playoff games. I also don't remember him blowing any series, just kind of performing as expected. I also don't remember him being particularly great in the Gold Medal Olympics run (again, not bad either). My memory isn't perfect, maybe this calls for a more in depth analysis, if you guys are up for it?

He was on a meh offensive team, 18th in goals for, 4th in goals against in the regular season, the leading scorer on the team had 59 points.

In that playoff run:
The LA Kings played 26 games and scored 88 goals - 3.38 goals/game
The New York Rangers played 25 games and scored 64 goals - 2.56 goals/game

A difference of 0.8 goals per game. Lundqvist's GAA during that run was 2.14

So Lundqvist is managing to only allow only 2 goals per game, but is against an opponent who was capable through the playoffs of scoring almost 1 more goal than his own team.

Edit: Again name another ATD relevant player on that team who was at their peak. I don't understand what more Lundqvist is supposed to do?

I feel like you misread or misinterpreted my post. I said he was good that year and the Rangers weren’t bad, which is true. This wasn’t Brodeur carrying the Devils to the Finals against the Kings, that was a bad team. And I’ll give you one more, they beat the 1st place Pens in the playoffs that year. I also didn’t say they should’ve beat the Kings, everyone knew the WCF was the real Cup Final that year. I also don’t remember him stealing any games to make it a closer series than it should’ve been, sometimes you will see that in a mismatched series.

Anyway, the focus of my post was about his playoff career as a whole, not 2014

Ignoring the sensationalistic tone from the article I posted during the pick. He's clearly a clutch performer but he can only affect half the game.

https://thehockeynews.com/news/why-henrik-lundqvist-is-the-greatest-game-7-goaltender-in-history

After Wednesday night’s victory over the Washington Capitals, Lundqvist now has a career Game 7 record of 6-1 to go along with remarkable stats in those games. In Game 7s, Lundqvist’s goals-against average is 0.97 and save percentage is .962. That’s not to mention he has one shutout and has only allowed more than one goal against in a Game 7 once, and that was his only loss. Compared to the greats, Lundqvist is the most clutch Game 7 goaltender of all-time.

Edit: HT I realize my posts are half screaming into the void with some posters and half replying to you

To that specific point game 4

The Rangers score 2 goals on 19 total shots

Lundqvist allows 1 goal on 41 shots

Edit: And game 5

To try and fight another day, the Rangers take 28 total shots, the Kings took 48. The Rangers end up losing in double OT handing the Kings the cup.

That Game 7 record is nice, it needs some context and I think looking at all games facing elimination is a better exercise but it’s a nice start.

I wish I could continue this, but I’m getting ready to go out for the night (and getting yelled at for taking to long lol). I will give some more thoughts tomorrow including why I took Vasilevskiy over Lundqvist and some of the others (part of it is team fit). FWIW if I had been in your spot at this point in the draft Lundqvist is definitely who I would’ve taken.

Glad to see us finally getting some good debate. I think BB said this earlier, there used to be a lot more criticism and discussion in the draft. Sometimes it leads to someone getting really pissed off but a lot of times it leads to us all learning more about the players being discussed.

Personally, I don't think Lundqvist was the best goalie available, but he was certainly in the ballpark and is good value.

But to claim he was by far the best player selected for several rounds is ridiculous.

"Arguments by project ranking" really have to stop in the ATD.

It has no meaning.
Why? They shouldn’t be the only argument, but I think they have a place here. You claimed Lundqvist wasn’t the best player drafted recently, and pointed to a recently drafted player. I noted that Lundqvist was voted as being better than said player just a couple years ago.

That doesn’t necessarily make Lundqvist a better pick than GP, but it is a data point suggesting he was the better player.

Please keep this same energy when other people do it too.

I only referenced it because it was explicitly referenced on a recent pick

Edit: If there's one position where it makes sense though it's a goaltenders

I'm torn because I do agree that some players are unfortunate and don't have the benefit of timing to be on a great team and win a Cup. Do I think Lundqvist could win a few rings behind the 70s Habs? Yeah, if I was a betting man I would make that bet. On the other hand, drafting a player that was a significant part of winning a Cup (or more) proves they can do it.

My son was hoping we'd draft a certain recent goalie who didn't win, and I told him that I preferred to draft a guy who had won between the pipes just to avoid any question of whether they could.

Sure but in this case, he was on a team that was proven capable of making the cup finals largely on his back. He's the only member of that team in his prime who will be drafted in this ATD, against 2-3 ATD relevant players (Kopitar and Doughty have been long since selected).

HT referenced the 2012 Devils already, besides Brodeur they had both Kovalchuk and Elias as ATD relevant players. Lundqvist never had the same support in his prime from the offense.

if you guys think Lundqvist is better than Perreault, then make the case directly. Using a proxy by some random consensus from the HoH forum is not an argument. The projects are great for the research but the final lists are next to worthless in my view.

Anyway, this is all moot. I think Lundqvist is a fine pick here, and I wouldn't have said anything of RB didn't go overboard with his claims.

Another thing, even if Lundqvist was really the best player drafted for several rounds, it would be meaningless information considering goalies are a parallel position that play for 60 minutes a game, and thus the comparative advantage or disadvantage they have can't be compared to that of skaters.

Please keep this same energy when other people do it too.

I only referenced it because it was explicitly referenced on a recent pick

Edit: If there's one position where it makes sense though it's a goaltenders

I'm 99.9999% sure this isn't the first time I am publicly against such arguments.

I think the HoH lists provide immense value, but their value here is limited (though obviously not zero). The core problem is the projects value different things.

Everybody needs 8 wingers here, but only 4 centres (plus spares). But centre is a deeper position so you get the mishmash of good centres going after poor wingers. That's not even getting into fit or defensive play. We are intentionally picking guys to be 4th liners.

Goalies are especially weird. I think Lundqvist is fine as a starter, but a low end one for sure. But everyone needs a starter and that won't necessarily align with how the HoH goes.

A lot of goalies in history could’ve padded their résumé on that team.
