ATD 2024: The 20th Anniversary Edition

The all-time draft is a what-if scenario, the counterfactual reasoning tool of the academic discipline of History. The greatest players of all time, from the amateur era to the NHL to the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, WHA, etc are drafted BASED on their whole career. No peak vs. career; instead, peak and career, all considerations. A player who was injury prone will be no less so in an all-time competition.

GMs are encouraged to provide bio info like stats, quotes and/or comments when at the podium to announce their picks.

(NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS!)

Note for new GMs:
Active players today in the 2023-2024 season are judged BASED on their career to date, meaning no projections of what he will do in the future, but instead: Imagine they suffered a freak career-ending accident the day you draft them.

The draft clock will begin Monday, February 5th at noon Eastern. The 1st round clock will be 24 hours long, dropping to 12 hours for round 2.

2). Time Limits.

24 hrs for round 1
12 for round 2
10 for rounds 3-10
8 for 11-14
6 for 15-20
4 for rest.

There will be 24 rounds, with 18 starting skaters, 2 goalies, a coach and three others for the bench. After the draft there will be votes tallied by an ex-ATDer or mod and a regular season standings list resulting. Then playoff match-ups.

Kovy's ability to play the point on the PP is definitely something that adds value, in fact in past years I think that's been the main reason some GMs have drafted him. As far as PK, I have that Kovy only received regular PK time in 3 seasons, and 2 of those were fairly low usage. He should not be a PKer in the ATD.

He got screwed not even showing on that list IMO. Numerous players on the bottom 3rd were not as impactful side by side.

Even if it hurt him a bit, it comes down to this. He’ll always have a place in the ATD as a plug-and-play glue guy, and that’s certainly valuable.

I'm not going to get into it here but there are names below 50 who don't stack up with what Harris accomplished and what contemporary praise exists. The sheer volume of information on him dwarfs a lot of the other guys and a couple pages of discussion doesn't change the fact that many of the other players on that list have little dug up so i find it hard to cement them higher on an all time list unless we're going to simply disparage Harris based on scoring output, which, some of the other players ranked on the bottom 3rd of the list don't shine/stand out on either. And some of those same players don't have the defensive rep or bullet points in Stanley Cup matches.

Maybe I'm biased because I did the leg work on Harris. But he was a supremely talented defensive winger, who could play either side, was uber physical but not criminal, and produced more than once during the playoffs, namely in 1916 and 1921.

Compared to other wingers in the 50+ range, yeah he got overlooked IMO.

He got screwed not even showing on that list IMO. Numerous players on the bottom 3rd were not as impactful side by side.

Between his defensive reputation which is significant (my very thorough bio highlighted this) and numerous AS nods at different positions and multiple really good playoff performances, to not even make an honorable mention seems like an oversight.

Really wish I had been in a better spot in life to participate but him missing from that list was one of the first things I noticed.

I was initially higher on him than anyone else in the project. Like noticeably higher. But I was probably too deep into the ATD mindset with my initial ballots.

But yeah, I think the project definitely did him dirty.

Also I would hardly call the Portland team in 1915-16 overmatched, they didn't have a Taylor or a Foyston sure but they were a talented team.

Not in the draft obviously but reading with great interest. Given that I got into hockey in the late 00s, I'm always fascinated to see where recent players go in relation to one another, one such case being Pastrnak and Kovalchuk. Without getting too deep into the merits of both players- how much would Kovy's added flexibility as a PP point man and PKer add to his value in this? Is it a real consideration or mostly negligible?

Sorry if a question like that on draft dynamics is out of place in an active one.

Kovalchuk should be picked higher but GMs are scared of being called out on his chemistry problem.

His ability to play PP pointman is an asset he has going for him, if a GM is stuck without a strong left pointman Kovy becomes an interesting option. Not sure how often that happens.

Even if it hurt him a bit, it comes down to this. He’ll always have a place in the ATD as a plug-and-play glue guy, and that’s certainly valuable.

Especially since offensively he's much more of a playmaker than a goal scorer, a rarity this low.

He literally played RW for an entire season and was a unanimous AS choice there by more than just Mickey Ion if my memory serves me right. Pretty sure that was his big year with Portland. My bio has it readily available. Guessing very few people in the project even know it exists and the project really petered out towards the end as I read the entirety of it.

But counting stats like relative VsX were definitely used and Harris isn't going to feature well there. So people see weaker offensive numbers and just toss him aside.

No he isn't Jack Walker defensively but he's absolutely in the next tier below that based on the bio I have up. His very first AS nod was based on how dominant he was viewed defensively, That's in the bio as well. And that defensive and physical rep continued for the entirety of his career of which was not exactly short.

It's not just the quality of information I have for all to see on Harris, it's the quantity too. Combined it is more significant than many others on the lower 3rd of that list. Maybe others would ascend if we had more to read but right now that doesn't exist and I'm not going to rank a guy higher simply because he scored more, without knowing the other pro's and con's to their game.

I do agree his ATD skillset is more valuable than his ranking in a project, but I just can't see how numerous wingers that showed up on that list towards the bottom, had more impactful careers with as much praise over the length of time Harris's arc. Scoring, sure? All around ability? Nah.

7th in league scoring 23 points behind Bernie Morris and 14 behind a teammate?

I know of your bio, you used my statistical presentation from my 2017 bio.....which while factual definitely makes his record look better than it is.

I do see the all-star mention from the referees, 1916/17 is a season I didn't bother getting to so you are correct that he is listed as the pick for RW. But like I said earlier, who did he really beat out?

All around ability? Nah

But does that really matter for the bounds of the project? To me the results are pretty clear that he was a good third wheel on a team who was capable of doing the little things. His teams didn't have particularly good results.

His all around game is so much more relevant to the ATD. There's a reason Nels Stewart is top 100 on the HOH project but goes in the 150s and it's the reverse situation here

Not a lot of time here to talk about it, but we're taking Mike Grant. ImporterExporter will be around to elaborate, I'm sure.

This came down to value once again and taking advantage of new information thanks to a HoH project. I think we're going to need another draft or 2 before we start seeing the early era guys ascend to more accurate draft positions but it will happen.

With Grant, he was one of the earliest superstar players in the pre 1900 range. Incredible skating (won speed skating championships in 3 different age groups as an 11 year old) ability and puck moving were his calling cards. He furthers the transition game for us and as a bottom pairing player in a 24 team draft, seems like a luxury to have his services considering his reputation and standing based on the pre-merger project from last year.

From a value standpoint look at where Grant ranked and where he was picked relative to other defensemen already off the board. I do think offensively challenge F's (who were conversely very good defensively suffered in this project to varying degrees).

Grant ranked 25th (all positions included). We drafted Grant at 327.

Even if they're even on the ranking scale, I don't think we'll see a 4 round gap between them moving foward.
