ATD 2024: The 20th Anniversary Edition

The all-time draft is a what-if scenario, the counterfactual reasoning tool of the academic discipline of History. The greatest players of all time, from the amateur era to the NHL to the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, WHA, etc are drafted BASED on their whole career. No peak vs. career; instead, peak and career, all considerations. A player who was injury prone will be no less so in an all-time competition.

GMs are encouraged to provide bio info like stats, quotes and/or comments when at the podium to announce their picks.

(NO MENTIONING UNDRAFTED PLAYERS!)

Note for new GMs:
Active players today in the 2023-2024 season are judged BASED on their career to date, meaning no projections of what he will do in the future, but instead: Imagine they suffered a freak career-ending accident the day you draft them.

The draft clock will begin Monday, February 5th at noon Eastern. The 1st round clock will be 24 hours long, dropping to 12 hours for round 2.

2). Time Limits.

24 hrs for round 1
12 for round 2
10 for rounds 3-10
8 for 11-14
6 for 15-20
4 for rest.

There will be 24 rounds, with 18 starting skaters, 2 goalies, a coach and three others for the bench. After the draft there will be votes tallied by an ex-ATDer or mod and a regular season standings list resulting. Then playoff match-ups.

Since it's the last pick of the whole draft, I figured I'd try and go outside the box with it to make things interesting... Hogsmeade selects goalie coach Mitch Korn.

"He is an innovator,” [Braden] Holtby said. “He is at the top of coaching. He is always coming up with new ideas. He has adapted with every single style change over the years, and he has usually been the first to adapt. He lives and breathes hockey and watches it religiously. He is always finding ways to see the position differently. He is a very intelligent hockey man.

Mitch has been with me for 20-odd years. He’s a problem-solver. He has the ability to think outside the box to solve problems with goaltenders. Connecting the dots from a positional standpoint to a mental standpoint.

Korn had the keen sense to play amateur psychologist with [Tomas] Vokoun, realizing the goalie had obsessive compulsive disorder and getting him under the right type of care. Vokoun blossomed into one of the best goaltenders in the NHL…

“[Hasek] was so smart he knew exactly what was going to happen next, but he was too early,” Korn said. “So he showed his hand like a bad poker player, and that gave players a chance to adjust to Dom, and so he just didn’t have enough patience to make greatness of his ability to process what was going on.”

Korn, now the Washington Capitals’ goalie coach, compares playing goal to a 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle.

“I believe Dominik Hasek’s one of the few guys that had all thousand pieces,” he said. “I can tell you when I met Dom, almost all of the thousand pieces were spread out all over the table, and they weren’t put together yet.”

So they worked on an array of goaltending skills – skating, handling the puck and even catching it.

“Literally, Dom had to learn how to close his glove and catch pucks,” Korn said. “He didn’t really close his glove to catch pucks.”

With Mitch, the thing that makes him the best goalie coach out there is he’s adapted to the times. Back in the ’90s, everyone was supposed to be more like Hasek — stop the puck, don’t worry about technique. Goalie coaches taught you agility, they taught movement. Hasek, Patrick Roy — everyone thinks of Roy as a butterfly goaltender but when he started out he was much more of a feel guy, more acrobatic.

Mitch understands the way the game has changed. You just look at what he did with Pekka [Rinne], with Holtby, even back in the early days in Nashville with guys like Mike Dunham and Chris Mason. He knows that structure and technique is how you develop now.

With Mitch [working for NYI], though, that’s a huge positive for Robin [Lehner]. Mitch is a guy who will make you work but will also listen. He understands guys so well.

The joke was that Korn was like Yoda from the Star Wars movie franchise. Trotz even often referred to Korn as the character who trains Luke Skywalker to be a Jedi Knight.

The following are the goaltenders that Korn has worked with as starters in his ~30 years as a goaltending coach in the NHL: Dominik Hasek, Mike Dunham, Tomas Vokoun, Chris Mason, Dan Ellis, Pekka Rinne, Braden Holtby, Robin Lehner, Semyon Varlamov, Ilya Sorokin. Of those, all but Vokoun had their highest leaguewide SV% ranking in seasons working under Mitch Korn.

Additionally, here are those goalies' notable Vezina finishes under Korn:

Draft is done. Fun as always, but we shouldn't let the grass grow. It's Tuesday morning. My preference is to have division voting in by end of day Sunday - Pacific time if that's easier for everyone, or by Tuesday at the latest. It's easy to let this get away from us if we just play it by ear. The longer we, er, linger, the more people fade away and don't participate. Not everyone has to be posting or writing paragraphs and paragraphs, but the more votes the better.

We need...

1. add/drop to end (48 hours is often cited; from now, unless objections: lock & load);

2. An assassination period (we need AT LEAST A WEEK, often a month; unless objections 2 weeks, 14 days from now);

3. Voting for regular season standings is to be no earlier than after a clear end to add/drops and a clear end to assassinations.

4. So,... regular season voting day will be Tuesday, April 2nd (the one to tally the votes to be announced by next week).

5. We will have weeks for playoff rounds before the NHL playoffs begin!

I've got the ultimate workhorse as a starter, so a guy that is kind of "flash in the pan"-y with a high peak but low sustainability actually works really well as a backup.

I will obviously defer to the majority, but anything open-ended (like clear end) could take the wind out of the sails of this. If a week is too short for assassinations and the add-drop period (I disagree, I think anyone who wants to delve deep into debate is more apt to do it sooner rather than later), we should still lay out a full, firm, schedule. If we're assassinating until April 2nd, then division voting should be due no later than April 5th, with subsequent votes due no later than a week after each playoff match-up is posted. Obviously we can't expect whoever is kind of enough to tally the votes and set-up the playoff matches to be on call, so we can't have exact dates, but we can be firm on how long playoff debates should be. To me, the goal should keep as many people involved in this for as long as possible and playing it by ear is more likely to lose people.

Feel like Thomas got a bit underrated to still be available at the end of the draft, he has greatness in him at his best and after his 2 big seasons, 08 is also a pretty good year statistically (4th in SV%) and then in 12 maybe is a fringe top 10 goalie. It's not the best longevity ever but it's not like he was only good for one season. I definitely like the pick over Bishop.

I was behind the clock and just picked the first goalie who came to my head lol. I mean two Vezinas and a Smythe is pretty good from a backup.
