Three Rivers will add the best RW left on the board by a pretty wide margin in our estimation.

He's a dynamic offensive player, equally adept at scoring and passing. Our HoH brethren like @Batis and @VMBM and @DN28 highlighted his stellar work on the PK and 2 way game in numerous posts over the years. He won FOUR straight WC AS nods over Boris Mikhailov from 74 to 77. Ranked just barely outside the top 100 in the latest HoH project.

TRCH is pleased to welcome:

Vladimir Martinec, RW

You can also see how good he was vs the Soviet's and Canada/WHA which continues to highlight his sterling reputation against the best/big games:

Czechoslovak Players against Canada, NHL, WHA

Czechoslovak Players against the USSR

Solid pick to play with Lalonde.

Broda usually doesn't go this early.

Huh.

And of the next 12 picks before the team's next round selection, only two teams need a goalie.

Lack of LWers picked since Busher Jackson (excluding Robitaille) made him unexpectedly fall. He's a great pick at this point.

I wrote the book on this guy (literally), so I figured I had to get at least one of the players off his famous line in Chicago!

I'll get Zetterberg and Datsyuk.

Datsyuk has particularly excellent road even strength scoring (and +/-) stats.

They will round out my top six and play with Kurri, which will be a line that draws a ton of penalties while taking very few, and don't let the lack of penalty minutes fool you, we've all seen Datsyuk and Zetterberg not be intimidated, but Kurri was just that way, and he faced more abuse given the era. It did not deter him at all, at least in the Edmonton days.

Great couple of picks. I don't think they were ever reunited in the ATD before.

They usually played on different lines.

Together they weren't producing.
"It's not going," (undrafted coach) told reporters in Detroit after practice Friday. "I told them and [the media] I wasn't going to split them up and 11 games in, I'm splitting them up. It wasn't by plan and not necessarily what I wanted to do, but we need to. We think we need more going."

On my phone and my Krutov pick posted before I could make a few comments…

Both a two-way and physical player who can play the PK. Strong and consistent prime with very strong showings in the Canada Cups.

Reunited with real-life Captain Fetisov

Calling Krutov a two-way player is...interesting. The center of that line played the classic Soviet midfielder's role, and the wings "defended" mainly by possessing the puck, Krutov being obviously the lesser of the two. He was the least important defensive player on the Green Unit, and not especially noteworthy as a backchecker, though the penalty-killing is real.

I dunno...we underrated Krutov in the past for reasons I'm not going to dive into here, but taking an entirely charitable view of his career is likely a distortion, as well. That being said, there's certainly an argument that he's the best left wing available.

Here is something @Batis posted during the Top 200 Project from Ron Reusch during the '87 Canada Cup TV Broadcast:

"There is Krutov. Most valuable player in the Soviet Union last year. Most think now he is probably their best forward, he's gone by Makarov. And the thing they like to talk about Krutov, the thing they keep mentioning is not only is he a great offensive player with great speed, great balance and all of those things, but he is also a terrific defensive player, great backchecker, plays a total game."

Meh...one quote from a color commentator watching Krutov at his absolute peak who otherwise knew little about the player doesn't interest me. Krutov's one-season peak was, in fact, extremely good, but if he was anything special defensively, we'd hear about that from European sources, which to my knowledge, we do not.

I mean...one Soviet called an undrafted forward who competed in the 1976 Canada Cup the greatest Canadian player, but no one more familiar with that player takes the claim in any way seriously. Other than perhaps Ultimate Hockey and Kings of the Ice, there is probably no worse source of information on hockey players than the ramblings of television announcers
