I don't think Gerard is a good enough pointman to be the lone guy up top. I think Gerard was the BDA when you drafted him, but his offense is just good, not great. Conacher and Lindsay can take turns going to the net I suppose.

I'm wanting Lindsay to be the net presence and have Conacher available to take feeds for his Rocket shot.

I'll hold off on judgments until reading more about Gare then. I think maybe you could have used a more balanced offensive player on the RW of Ovechkin and Taylor but RWs with glue guy attributes who are good passers aren't exactly in high supply.

After completing Gare's bio, I think I'm going to slot him into the 3rd line RW spot next to Ratelle and find a bottom of the barrel 1st line RW. I found many quotes calling Gare a heart a soul player, tough, determined, etc., but basically nothing calling him a hard hitter or a guy who worked in the corners. He could probably do it, but I'd rather have a guy that I know can do it.

I think that is wise. Gare would also be maybe the worst offensive first liner in the draft, which I think you should probably try to avoid.

Did you forget Walker, or do you think he's better offensively than Gare? Walker is definitely the better player, but just offensively they seem close.

Gare was an ok scorer and weak playmaker. Walker was an ok playmaker and weak scorer.

Forgot that he was on a first line. Yeah, he's comparable to Gare in terms of overall offense, though he's obviously a much better defensive player. As the progenitor of the hook check, Walker has always fascinated me. I wish I knew more about exactly when he played what positions for Seattle because it might shed some light on his use of the hook-check, but sadly, that information is rather hard to come by. I believe he was mainly a rover before the PCHA switched to six-man hockey, but after that point, it is much less clear. Foyston seems to have rotated between LW and C, and Morris between C and RW, which would mean that Walker probably played all three forward positions for the Mets during that period. It would not surprise me to learn that Seattle had a scheme set up such that Walker's defensive responsibilities essentially remained the same regardless of which position he was playing, but it would be nice to get some confirmation of that intuition.

Yeah, I was hoping to dig up some more info on Walker this draft. After being able to dig up some good info on Hay, I think I'll move on to Walker next.

I'm actually curious what you think of our checking line? I really like how the Joliat-Morenz-Walker line came together. Should be a very good 2-way shut-down line for us.

Thoughts on my top 4:

Gerard - Reardon
Grant - Svedberg

Should I move Svedberg down to the 3rd pairing and draft a physical partner for Grant?

During the early 20's he was used almost exclusively as a rover.

And he's worse offensively than Gare. But he's also super fab defensively.

Is he actually?

Gare
Points - 18th, 20th
Goals - 1st, 5th, 12th, 12th
Assists - none

Walker (my consolidated #s)
Points - 5th, 14th, 18th, 19th
Goals - 14th, 15th, 16th
Assists - 2nd, 6th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 17th, 18th (also led a minor league in assists twice)

Add in that Walker was absolute money in the play-offs - 1st, 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 5th in play-off scoring.

Should I move Svedberg down to the 3rd pairing and draft a physical partner for Grant?

Not necessarily a physical brute, but a sound positional guy for Grant and move down Svedberg is what I would do.

Chara-Kelly
Pronovost-Numminen

Does anyone know if Pronovost was effective at both sides?

I think that Pronovost played the left side next to the right handed Bobby Baun in Toronto. No idea where he played in Detroit (where he spent his the majority of his career and his prime). Agree with your advice to mark.

As far as PK unit defencemen pairing goes , should I keep the D squad's hierarchy intact?

Meaning Bourque-Coulter on the 1st unit and Thomson-Mortson on the 2nd unit?

Yes. Bourque and Coulter is an awesome PK pairing, and Thomson-Mortson is pretty good too.

Geez ya Bourque and Coulter on the first pairing is fantastic.

Thanks , my first unit will be Klukay-Luce-Bourque-Coulter.

Still undecided about my 2nd unit forwards.

As an offensive player, I'd take Gare over Walker without a second thought. At even strength, Gare mostly played with other checkers. Walker played with vastly superior offensive players who outscored him greatly. It's logical to assume that they helped drag his point totals to the modest levels that they reached.
