Did rask have a penchant for it at the time? Does Wallstedt? Honestly asking, I don't know.
If a goalie is quick to emotion and breaks his stick, it means nothing. If a goalie is slow to emotion and breaks his stick, it means much.

Tuukka was absolutely an emotional goalie, especially his younger self. Jesper doesn't give me that impression, but he is very competitive. You kinda need to reach the heights he already has. Not overly surprising he's not handling losing very well, especially with how close he is to the big leagues. There's a double whammy of losing those NHL opportunities and getting pumped five-goose for the 20th loss of the campaign down in the minors, figuratively speaking.

I wouldn't be worried about it. Frustration is part of competition. Hell, I'd me more worried if it didn't affect him at all.

The concern for me is that Iowa is supposed to be better this year especially with the veterans and the extra year for the young guys and Wallstedt is putting up some really horseshit numbers. He's either injured or something else is going on.

In 9 games he's given up 5 goals or more in almost half those games.

He has had as many .900+ games as he has sub .800.

Last year he had only 5 games where he gave up 5 goals or more in 45 games.

He also had 4 games of sub .800.

To me that is a huge red flag as he seems to be regressing on a better team. Either they need to get better defensemen (or better team defense) or something is wrong with Wallstedt.

McClean played Wallstedt on back to back nights against Texas. Wallstedt gave up 5 goals in the 3rd period of the second game. He was probably exhausted.

That's on the coach. Why he would do that...who the hell knows. Also saw that Wallstedt was being attended to during the second period so maybe pulled something or tweaked something?

No idea. There's serious questions around if McClean is the right guy for Iowa.

Hopefully he did not injure himself. That would suck.

I mean, they had problems with the PP, and then promoted the guy who was coaching it to "fix" that problem. Are they surprised the thing he's coaching now is also awful?

Is going from an NHL assistant coach to an AHL head coach a promotion? Seems more lateral than anything, but I agree with your overall point.

Yes, I have access to simple stats too.

Ah, yes. The ancient parable of the G and his stick. 😄

Also, i don't disagree i just liked the way you worded it enough to post. Like an ancient parable.

.889 sv% today. Couldn't catch the game. How did he look?

My impressions was that he was fine. He didn't make any spectacular saves, but also didn't let in any real bad goals either. Average, "did his job" kinda play. Thought his rebound control was notably not great.

I've seen and heard about his issues with rebounds.

Somewhere in time
He has the skills, he just needs regular games. It is really hard to judge a goalie in these emergency call up scenarios. He was fine against Vegas, plays a sound and steady positional game much like Gus. I am actually looking forward to a Gus-Jesper tandem next season. Should make it also easier to play with for the Wild D since the styles are similar and easier to predict than Fleury's wild athletic style.
