There's only a couple ways out at this point.
1) The Astros need to legitimately apologize, admit their win was tainted, and stop acting like victims or trying to say it was these other guys and not me. Of course, this ain't happening.
2) The commissioner needs to go back and vacate the title. But he'll look wishy washy to do it now, so he won't.
3) The details, not the generalities, of the investigation need to be released. Let everyone know who was involved, who did what, when, etc.. This can still be done.
I will say, the public humiliation and scorn, and the damage to their legacies, is not insignificant punishment. With all these other players dissing the Astros, I heard Jeff Passan yesterday say that a player privately told him he'd rather have been suspended. Being an MLB player is an exclusive club ... to suddenly be social outcasts and pariahs within that club is not a pleasant thing to go through. You won't see any friendly banter before/after games, or handshakes. They won't be getting chatty texts throughout the season from buddies on other teams inviting them over to their house when they're in town.
It's also not a coincidence that the ones closest to FA were most apologetic at first ... when they're out trying to get a bidding war going in the next year or two, how hard is that going to be if star players from other teams say, "no way I'm playing with that cheating scum." I tell you what, no way they get any interest from the two biggest bidders (NYY and LAD). So they're going to take a hit in the pocketbook in the long run.
They may be able to circle the wagons for a while ... but there's always a breaking point. I sure would not want to be one of those guys right now, and the more anger, arrogance and bravado they show, the more you know it's actually getting to them. And they think it's rough now, before they have to actually face other teams in person? The first time one of their former best buds on another team calls them a POS to their face and walks the other way, it's gonna hurt. I guarantee you it's coming.
