Assistant Coaches?

The latest from Brooks on the assistant search, it looks like Brown and Arniel are the leading candidates.
Newell Brown, who worked as Vigneault’s assistant for three years in Vancouver following stints in Anaheim, Chicago and Columbus, is a leading candidate to join the Rangers.

Scott Arniel, the former Blue Jackets head coach and long-time friend of Vigneault, might be a candidate to join the staff as well, but Arniel remains under contract to the Canucks as coach of the club’s AHL Chicago Wolves affiliate.

The Blueshirts are not believed to have yet sought permission to speak to Arniel, who has interviewed with the Canucks about replacing Vigneault but is not expected to get the job. Indeed, Tortorella is believed one of three finalists for the post in Vancouver, along with Jacques Martin and John Stevens.

Arniel and Brassard didn't see eye to eye in Columbus. Not sure about bringing in the former Columbus head coach with four former Columbus players on the roster.

Well, how the hell did you remember that?
but you are right.

Blue Jackets center Derick Brassard is expected to be a healthy scratch for the seventh time in 10 games tonight when the Jackets face the Calgary Flames in Saddledome. This has not sat well with Brassard, but he has said all the right things and declined to air his frustration with the media.

His agent, Allan Walsh, reached the boiling point today, however. He issued a scathing statement directed at Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel.

The message:

"While I have tremendous respect for (general manager) Scott Howson and the rest of Columbus' management team, the situation regarding Derick Brassard has become untenable. The coach has a history of burying players and using them as scapegoats to mask his own lack of success on the ice. Derick has been singled out, almost from the very beginning of the season, to be the fall guy in case things don't go well. The Columbus organization cares about Derick and has been good to him, but at some point, one has to say, enough is enough."

mmmm yeah, lets keep Brassard alive and well here. He's very important to this teams chances. No to Arniel

I'm confident that AV will select the right assistants for the Rangers.

Also, I can't speak for others but I'll admit: I will be absolutely ****ing thrilled that there will be 2 full-time assistants on the Rangers' bench again.

Through all the ups & downs I hated seeing Tortorella have just one voice next to him on the bench in Sullivan and not have someone else around to at least offer fresh ideas.

And maybe one upstairs as well?

As long as there are no walkie-talkies...

Don't put too much stock in the idea of an "upstairs" coach. During some of the darkest Sather years, that was Ted Green. I fully expect if this role will exist, it will be someone of the current reporting structure (ie. Schoenfeld).

If we went by titles alone, the Rangers had 3 assistants last year:
- Sullivan
- Schoenfeld
- Allaire (hired technically as an Assistant Coach & Goaltending coach - but maybe used the promotion clause to hire him from the Coyotes - early reports is Benoit had 1 contract year left in PHX)

Next year, fully expect a member of the old boys club (again, Schoenfeld) to technically be an assistant upstairs.

Schoenfeld has already dropped the title of assistant (although it's still listed as one of his jobs on the official website). He remains GM of Hartford. Sorry, don't remember where I saw it. There's been a lot of news out in the past week.

Really, probably better to make a clean break from the Tortorella regime. Keep Allaire obviously: he's not really in the same situation as the other assistants since he really only deals with goaltending.

Yep.

The game is just too fast now for only 2 guys on the bench. You really have to have a head coach plus two guys focusing on their sides if you want to be successful. Never fully understood why Torts didn't want to do that, but oh well.

Keep Sully as the PK/defense rotation assistant coach. Just keep him as far away from the PP possible.

Can't do a major remodel with out changing the curtains. Time to bring in some new coaches me thinks. Unless Sully is just over the top respected by the players.

Put Sullivan in Hartford as a defensive coach. Or, let him be the coach period, anything to get rid of Gernader.
