The problem is the Ducks cupboard is far from barren. They have their future D all but set. They have their future 1C. They have two candidates for 2C long term. They have a couple high end wing prospects. They have likely another top 10 pick coming.

If what you offer is less talented than what's in place or on the way, essentially aren't they trading a future starting goalie for like a future 5/6D, or a future 3rd liner? Doesn't seem worth it, even if it's multiple guys of that ilk.

Who's the absolute best young forward or D that Edmonton could even offer, and where would they rank in Anaheim's U23 pecking order?

In not an oiler fan. But just because the ducks have players in those slots doesn't mean they can't in theory puck up extra players in those top slots and figure out who they like best. Having young top 4 doesn't mean another prospect is guaranteed as the 5th best. Development isn't always linear.

I agree the Oilers would have a hard time offering a specific piece to the ducks that would exceed their top prospects. But moves like Drysdale for Gauthier do happen. I've already said it's possible the ducks keep Dostal. I'm just saying if the Oilers suddenly said they'd offer something ridiculous like the equivalent of 3 firsts (expected to be late and in future years), the Ducks would at least pause. Even if the Ducks ultimately say no for some of the reasons you described, 3 firsts, all I'm literally saying is that the ducks likely listen to the end before hanging up.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I didn't think it was that ridiculous that the Oilers could do something that wouldn't be met with an immediate no.

As if Askarov is the answer for any contender. These boards were saying Wallstedt was a huge miss for the Oil as if it's a foregone conclusion that a prospect was going to be an elite starter in this League. .864 in the AHL this year says STFU.

If the Oilers upgrade on Stu, and that's a big if, it'll be someone established atleast at the NHL level, not some magic beans that Nashville didn't even believe in.

True, but if I have 4 more highly regarded dmen than what's being offered, then 1) what's being offered isn't THAT special, and 2) I'm not desperate enough for that player to give up a guy who looks like he has a high probability of being my starter for the next decade.

I don't think the Oilers have a single prospect regarded that highly. Other teams might.

Late 1sts aren't worthless, but they're not gold either. The median outcome is nothing special. You most likely end up with a good B prospect.

The Ducks have had a dozen picks in rounds 1-3 the last two drafts alone. Quantity is not lacking for the Ducks ... at this point in their rebuild it's all about getting as much quality as possible. A top 10 pick is worth more than three late 1sts to a team in their position.

Besides which, you think there's not other teams that would offer 3 late 1sts for Dostal? If he were publicly made available, you'd have several playoff teams in on it. Hell, he's young enough some rebuilding teams might put together an offer ... and odds are they'd actually have blue chippers to offer.

Sharks gave up a 1st and a recent 1st rd center prospect to get Askarov as they believe he is the future for them. There's 0 chance they'd entertain this offer and very little chance they'd entertain any offer tbh. They have no reason to move him

This is one of the most amazing proposals I’ve ever seen on this site. It’s a fan completely disregarding the needs of the other team while asking the other team to trade a guy for less than what they just traded for him.

Just not a shred of logic in the deal.

I know Askarov hated playing in the A with the Preds and has had to swallow his disappointment with the Sharks too, playing with Barracuda, but come on.. A 4th round pick?!

:sarcasm:
