I don't think this is a knee jerk trade proposal. Oiler fans have been questioning Stuart Skinner's ability to backstop the team to a Stanley Cup. They came within two goals in game seven last year.

This year it seems even some of Skinner's teammates are running out of patience with his sub .900 play. So if the Oilers *really* want to go for it:

:edmonton

Yaroslav Askarov (G)
San Jose's 4th round pick 2025

:sharks

Oilers 1st round pick 2026
Stu Skinner (G)
Matt Savoie

Seems like a fair trade.

Edmonton should at least have a 1A 1B tandem instead of having Pickard which they don't seem to have confidence in. He's never allowed to take the net from Skinner.

So we just traded a first in 2025 and Edstrom for Askarov. Why would we downgrade to a later first and a decent but barely better prospect than Edstrom...4 months after making that trade?

And we get your shit goalie too? Hooray! Also amazing that the Sharks are giving up a 4th as well.

The Sharks traded away the pick acquired from the Golden Knights. I am not certain we're talking downgrade here.

Let's put the brakes on the hyperbole here. Skinner isn't a shit goaltender. The Oilers need an upgrade in net. No team trades a 1st and a prospect for a lateral move in position.

I realize the trade was made just a few months ago. Will Askarov be happy playing behind Blackwood and Vanecek? He is getting a shot because Vitek is hurt but it is a worthwhile question. He wants to be a starter. This trade guarantees that.

Sarcasm?

You mean the two UFAs at the end of the season? Yes.

And he has said as much.

Skinner is not a piece in any deal that gets you Askarov. Period.

Hmm. Why, yes, I do believe that is Skinner I see with one of the worst GSAE rates in the League despite being handed pretty good xGA numbers by his defense.
Maybe you meant to say "not as shit as Pickard", but that's not exactly a high bar to clear.

Based on this analysis of yours, the Jackets can outbid you by offering Elvis Merzlikins instead.

Say what you want about the proposal, but throwing Askarov into the deep end as a starter for a team with iffy defence and cup aspirations seems like a recepie for failure.

I was strongly against it for all of the reasons you gave. But then I double checked, and, indeed, us giving up an extra fourth changed my mind. Sharks say yes for sure.

(mods should probably lock this?)

Savoie + Skinner for future considerations, i.e. nothing, would be a relatively fair deal.

This is basically a late first for a 4th and one of the best goaltending prospects in the game. Grier blocks Bowman's number if he's offered this trade.

My knee just jerked out of its socket
Askerov is perfect fit for SJ timeline, hard no from SJ
Common... Let's say you happen to walk by the park at midnight and notice an unclaimed black briefcase under the bench and that just like that we end up trading in good fate.
