There's no world in which Saros and Askarov can't coexist for 2-3 years here. It may be good for everybody. And it may help the Preds maximize his value not as a prospect but as a young NHL goalie who has shown promise on NHL ice. There's no inherent deadline to deal him. If they get a stellar offer...he's available just like nearly every prospect would be.

No disagreement there. At the same time, Askarov's entry level contract ends after this season and he then becomes a RFA unless he is given an extension before hand. Preds would be wise to play him behind Saros this coming season to see where he is at. Also, Askarov is age 22 right now, but at what point is he going to want to move on to another team knowing Saros is extending for another 8 years. It weighs on a goalies mind, especially a high draft pick like Askarov, that he won't get an opportunity to be a #1 for the Preds.

Wings already have two decent goalie prospects in the system, they don't have room for Askarov.

Augustine. He had an amazing D+1 season. He's not the biggest so some questions on his ultimate upside. But it's hard for a D+1 goalie to have a better resume than he just put up.

didnt they ask like #11 last year for him ? but yeah goalies nowdays is just a flip, would use any major assets for a goalie in 2024 hockey.

No we drafted him 11th, we asked for a top 5 pick for Askarov + one of our 1sts last year.

If we were to move him it'd seem to be in a package to move up high.

True that. Caps have an undrafted goalie Clay Stevenson, who was better in the AHL than all the top drafted goalies for this season.

Trotz may be shopping Askarov a bit because Poile made the mistake drafting Askarov in the first place. Look at the Bolts, Rangers, Islanders as examples of teams who have high end goalies already, and won't draft a goalie in 1st round for many years to come or not at all. Askarov should not have been picked #11 in that draft, but maybe later bottom 10 of the 1st round or early 2nd round. That was in the past and done with. Askarov will be traded to another team, the question is when.

Damn you don't often see Predators giving up on a promising goalie. They must have seen something in Askarov that they didn't like.

More likely he asked to be traded since the Saros extension clearly indicates he has no path to a starting role in Nashville.

Because the Caps don't rush their goalies. They smartly let them cook in the AHL. It only happened with Sammy because it was strongly believed at the time he would be a long time NHL #1 goalie, but mentally he's never had it in him. Vanecek was rushed up because of Holtby fell apart, Copley did not progress well at the time and Lundqvist had the heart condition that ended his career.

Just to put this in perspective…he was picked #11 just a couple years ago and remains one of the best prospect goalies in the league. So, to get nothing but the 21st overall is not good asset management by the Preds. Like really bad.

Cory Schneider was a much more proven goaltender when the Canucks shipped him off to New Jersey for the 9th overall pick. I would guess that Askarov would likely be around that pick #15-20.

Preds have a good eye for goalies, and it's not like Saros came out of nowhere after the Askarov draft, so if they're choosing to move on they must see something they don't like.
