Any club should be able to get the basic info on a player's contract from the registry, be it dates of payment of signing bonuses, trade protection status, number of clubs he can be dealt to, etc.

If you have to give a NMC to a 3rd liner to get him, you should just be okay with not getting him.

Inexcusable, eh? I have dealt with a few people for whom it's always somebody else's fault. So, "Why did not anybody stop me from doing this?" is an excuse I have heard before. In both cases the responsibility rested with Ottawa's (Melnyk's) front office, and in both cases they have failed to conduct honest business. But of course, by all means, let's be mad at the NHL.

When Ottawa made the trade they should have / could have passed on the information. They decided not to, hence why they were punished.

The timing is not perfect, but the penalty is given to the franchise, not to the owner. As with any business purchase, the new owner accepts all obligations/debts/liabilities. The only troubling part in the whole thing is whether during sale discussions the seller (Melnyk's family) has honestly communicated this particular aspect to Andlauer, as was their obligation.

Everybody seems to think that the penalty was reduced due Kovalchuk retiring, but you are free to believe whatever you like since no official reason was released. Andlauer can try to appeal based on being new, but I would not be holding my breath.

As for Sens not knowing about the investigation, that's simply not true. Sens knew, Andlauer knew. Per Andlauer own words, he asked Sens about the investigation and was told it's a "non-issue".
