Habs have extra defenseman that match or exceed Kaliyevs value. Struble comes to mind. Already a 6th defenseman and likely tops of at 4th.

Unlike super dupper experts on HF, there must be a reason why Hughes hasn't pulled the trigger. Most logically is that Hughes and scouts don't think he's going to take that next step. Habs put a high value on the 200 ft game and won't bend on that.

Getting a player that can score a goal is pretty useless if he's going to Ice Graze on the next goal scored on his team.

Or....Blake thinks he can get Guhle...and free COSTCO hotdogs.

All signs are pointing towards LA’s intention to sell low on Kaliyev for a 4th line grinder veteran type player by the deadline. Blake will probably throw in an additional 4th or 5th round pick in the process. The only caveat is if ownership has put the handcuffs on Blake and prevents him from making any more moves but it’s clear that even with a new coach, Kaliyev is done with the Kings this season.
Podkolzin?? He fits that mold to a tee, dependable as they come but just hasn't made it yet. Put him with a playmaker who can put the puck in his wheelhouse and he can tee off.

Flames should be all over this if he doesn't end up on waivers

Can any kings fans chime in? What’s the deal with Kaliyev? Scouting reports vary widely from he’s a fringe nhler who can’t skate to a solid top 6 prospect. Habs fan here, and wanna know

he has a hell of a shot and should be in the Ovi spot on a teams 2nd PP unit. Issue is he struggles in a top 6 role and does not play a bottom six style.
It's frustrating as a kings fan as you don't know if he would develop into a decent top 6 if given a decent chance, or if there is something there as to why he is not getting that chance.

Cheers thanks man. Sounds like a specialist…. And as I’ve did on other posts, the days of specialists are disappearing. Unless you are an Ovi level sniper, that role is becoming more obsolete

Kaliyev will be picked up on waivers.
Surely the Kings will be able to extract something for him before exposing him to the waiver wire. Even a mid-round pick would obviously be better than nothing.

But is it a given, that he's done in L.A.? Sometimes with young player, they have to hit rock-bottom, before they start to realize their talent level and become productive players.

The big problem is though it's hard to tell if he's JUST a specialist because LA is too busy accommodating shitty vets like PLD so a guy like Kaliyev gets forced out of a good spot to make a bad player happy

Interesting to see how the top three scorers from the USA U20 gold medal team - Zegras, Kaliyev and Turcotte - have all had fits and starts to the beginning of their NHL careers.

Kaliyev seemed to be a bit one-dimensional and rigid in his movements with that team but had the size and willingness to go into hard areas to create scoring chances.

Not sure what has held back the other two players - though I believe there were some health issues.

Basically he is a sniper.
Pair him with a playmaking center who knows how open up players and he scores.
Also he needs to play on the right side since he shoots left and he relies on his one timers.
For all that his skating is irrelevant.

The kings tried him as speedy winger in a defensive role and on the left side on the PP2 unit.
So basically the opposite environment of what he needs.
For any reason, the Kings management don't understand why he can't shine in that role

The fact that he hasn't been traded or signed to an offer sheet tells me that there is little to no market for AK.

I am guessing he either signs and gives it one more shot with the Kings or bolts to Europe for the final countdown

Awesome scouting report. Thanks man. For us it sounds like he would be an amazing RW for Dach on the second line

If you have a chance to get him go for it.

It would deeply depress me especially since i hate you guys since 93
but what's happening here is a tragedy and he deserves a real hockey team.

Good luck to you guys
