Player Discussion Arshdeep Bains

Call me an unabashed optimistic, but I get definite Carter Verhaeghe vibes from Arshdeep Bains.

Verhaeghe was drafted by the Leafs in the third round of the 2013 entry draft, but was traded to the Islanders before ever suiting up for the Leafs.

His first two pro seasons were split between the AHL Bridgeport Sound Tigers and the Missouri Mavericks of the ECHL. He was a decent scorer in the minors, but nothing to write home about.

It wasn't until he was traded to Tampa in 2017 that his career started to take off. He had 17 goals and 31 assists his first year with the Syracuse Crunch. And then really exploded in year two, wracking up 34 goals and 48 assists in his second year with the Crunch.

Finally in year three in the Tampa organization, he was recalled to the Lightning and never looked back. He's been a consistent scorer, even adding 42 and 34 goal seasons after he left Tampa as a UFA and signed with Florida.

Bains certainly has the scoring touch. The only question is whether or not he can pick up the step he needs to cement place in the NHL. But back in the day, that was also the knock on Verhaeghe.

Sometimes players do keep on getting better in the minors. Hopefully the undrafted Bains is one of them.

I think scoring touch is the real key here. Aside from his last season in juniors, Bains' goal totals have been very average. It's extremely difficult to make it as a playmaking winger in the NHL and Bains doesn't project as a solid bottom 6 forward type. Like there are hardly any top 6 wingers who score less than 15 goals in the NHL. A guy like Teravainen has had 20 goal seasons. Bottom 6 "playmaking" wingers are even more rare.

I haven't followed Verhaeghe's career closely enough to know what happen to him but recall that when he was drafted he was more of a playmaking C who needed to fill out and get stronger. He obviously developed a scoring touch.

Although I'd love for that to happen, I do think that's quite optimistic.

Verhaeghe had 48 points in 58 games as a 22 year old, then 82 points in 76 as a 23 year old.

Bains at 22 had 38 points in 66 ganes, 55 points in 59 games at 23, and 43 points in 50 games now.

The offensive ceiling is not the same imo.

Call me an unabashed pessimist but I see a really good AHL player that has hit the plateau of his potential. He just doesn't have enough stand out tools to find a spot as a regular in the NHL. Glad to have him in Abby and he's a great story of perseverance but I don't see much of an NHL career in his future. Hopefully he makes a decent career for himself in the AHL and Europe.

Verhaeghe can skate way better than Bains. Bains is a career AHLer.

If he doesn’t improve his skating, this is accurate. A strong result for an undrafted free agent, nonetheless.

Verhaghe also led the AHL in goals / points at 23 and had 14 more points than his second highest scoring teammate. It was a dominant season.

Bains still has a shot at making the NHL but don’t think you can project anywhere near the same upside.

There's probably a countless number of guys that match Verhaeghe's numbers but never made it, that alone isn't a good measuring stick. Bains has done well to push it this far and hopefully he can keep pushing, but realistic he remains a long shot to be a good NHLer.

In my opinion the trick is to have a handful of guys like this on the farm to hedge your bets that one or two will make it through to the NHL, but its not something you can really predict.
