Sometimes a player is what he is, not what he was a couple of years ago.

I want to feel bad for Saros, but my favorite Michigan Man is one of those helping deal the damage so I'm kind of conflicted.

I mean a couple weren't on him, but he had a couple he absolutely should have had. It's pretty much what we have seen all season. You need a guy with that contract to be making those types of stops and he simply isn't, whether it is for us or Finland.

The cap is set to rise by 25.5 million going into the 27-28 season. At the end of that season, RoR, Stamkos, and Josi have expired and Marchessault has 1 season. I dont think Saros contract is going to hinder us as much as the age of the team.

It does if he stinks and you need another goalie. No one wants to be burning 14+ million on goalies.

A bad contract is a bad contract no matter what the cap happens to be. The question is whether this is going to be another bad contract for us. Trotz hasn't exactly delivered a lot of good value contracts in his short tenure. Even the middling "value veteran" contracts have been quickly shown the exit slides.

Hopefully, Saros is just having a rough patch and not completely cooked. Statistically, he is a notch or two down from where he was playing under Hynes and Lavi. Bruno's system is wreaking havoc on most of our guys.

Some terrible defense and bad luck was involved but that was not a good performance from Saros.

As others have mentioned Saros isn’t blameless but it’s crazy that Finland has a worse defensive group than we do. We really need to hope that Saros can find some second win after a couple of down seasons like Pekka did.

Trotz has definitely hit upon a solution to ensure we don't have any big contract extensions on the horizon. Just stop playing any younger players who might otherwise have been up for a raise. Lock up veterans on long-term NMCs. Boom, Cap-certainty for the forseeable future.

You act like Trotz isn't going to keep signing old players on bad contracts. Just cause those guys age out doesn't mean things change all that much.

So plus side of this bad contract is it might keep him from getting a different old guy on a bad contract

I'm sure Shea Theodore won't be the only player who gets hurt in the silly tournament.

It's just kind of funny it happened to a Vegas player, so that everybody can cry about how they will undoubtedly Kucherov him on LTIR until the playoffs start, trade for some star replacement, and recycle that whole conspiracy theory.
