Sure, and they also have Frattin. The point is the narrative that the team is littered with future NHL stars is completely incorrect especially if you want to compare them to the 2013 Bingo club it's pretty similar in terms of veterans and B/C prospects.

I don't see a lot of future stars except for Nylander.

But that clubs going through a massive fudementa ll stage... Have put together a beast AHL club... Focusing on skill and have begun stockpiling picks.

Leafs should also be getting two more free wallets

Nikita Zaitsev - expected to sign at end of KHL season

Jimmy Vesey - NCAA loophole to sign with Toronto... Leafs hired his dad as a "scout"

Mitch Marner will be better than Nylander.

That's good since they essentially have to fill their entire future roster besides one spot currently taken by Rielly. Maybe Gardiner. And that's it in terms of NHL talent they have now. They'll need at least 10-12 of their guys to pan out and not just as good bottom 6, broom pairing guys.

Komarov, JVR, and Kadri are three solid middle six forwards. I'd hold on to them as a base

Kadri and Komarov are far from a lock as being a part of the foundation of the Maple Leafs. All three guys you mentioned could be traded within the next two years. Assuming the Stamkos thing happens in July and if they get lucky by landing Jimmy Vesey and a top 3 pick in the draft, this is a conservative look at what the depth chart could look like for Toronto going into training camp for 2016.

Training Camp Forward Group:

Steven Stamkos
William Nylander
Mitch Marner
Matthews/Laine/Puljujarvi
James van Riemsdyk
Nazem Kadri
Jimmy Vesey
Connor Brown
Leo Komarov
Tyler Bozak
Andreas Johnson
Nikita Soshnikov
Brendan Leipsic
Milan Michalek
Joffrey Lupul
Peter Holland
Tobias Lindberg
Kasperi Kapanen
Frederik Gauthier
Martins Dzierkals
Jeremy Bracco
Zach Hyman
Dmytro Timashov
Daniel Winnik
Colin Greening

Training Camp Defensive Group:

Morgan Rielly
Jake Gardiner
Nikita Zaitsev
Stuart Percy
Travis Dermott
Andrew Nielsen
Rinat Valiev
Viktor Loov
Frank Corrado
Scott Harrington
Matt Hunwick
Jared Cowen
Andrew Campbell

+ 11 other draft picks from 2016.

Yikes, that is still a season of pain for Toronto next year. Which is fine because they're lining their pockets with 2017 draft picks as well.

Yeah there's no way they can go into next year with that defense if they want to have Marner and Nylander on the roster. That's a disaster waiting to happen. They'll be in the market for vets they can sign to short term deals and deal for more picks/prospects.

There are only three "locks" on defence for next season.

Rielly, Gardiner and Zaitsev.

The other 3 or 4 spots will likely be filled in by a couple youngsters and a couple cheaper UFA veterans, who will later be traded for picks.

Ugh Doug Wilson is such a moron. Two 2nds for Polak is laughable.

Wish we were in a position to take advantage of such stupidity, but the only players I could see being traded at the deadline are Chiasson and Wiercioch.

Curious. Is Zaitsev a lock just as a guarentee to bring him over?

Pretty much.

I'm sure the 2016 Maple Leafs recruiting strategy will be as follows:

1) don't bother signing anyone on the first day of UFA, and wait until all of the teams who actually want to do well this coming season lock up all of the actually good top-tier UFA players You know, the good ones, not just the guys who are good support players.

2) After about 3 or 4 days, there will be some random 29-33 year old 3rd line players who were the unlucky ones not to get big time offers on the first few days of UFA. Offer those players 1-year "show me" deals, with the promise that they will be traded at the deadline to a contending team for a playoff run as long as they play 3/4 of the season for a garbage Leafs team. You'll probably get two or three guys willing to play for you simply because your team is so bad that they will almost be guaranteed top-6 minutes and a bump in production that those players would never get simply because they wouldn't get quality minutes with almost any other team. Let's call this the "Mason Raymond Effect", formerly known as the "Dominic Moore Effect", formerly known as the "Bates Battaglia Effect"

3) collect random late 3rd-6th round picks from various contending teams. Hope one of those picks pans out in 3 years with an NHL-caliber player.

Polak (a pending UFA) and Spaling for a pair of 2nds makes Phaneuf for a bunch of untradeably bad contracts, a 2nd and a B prospect look like highway ****ing robbery.

I thought Spalling was a decent bottom 6 player before he got to the Leafs. what happened to him?

On a side note, I like how leafs fans have other team's UFA as locks for their team next season.

So is Torres another buyout salary dump move by the Leafs? Or do we now have to worry even more about protecting our players?

I didn't think that guy would ever be allowed on NHL ice again.

He is staying with SJ's AHL club. He shouldn't be a concern.
