Around the NHL: Playoff Edition

  • Sportsbook will reset after the Cup is won
The issue with Thompson was he was a 4C that we had to play at 3C because we had no center depth. He was a perfectly fine player though.
Yeah that's true, but that's not Thompson's fault. It'd be like criticizing Poehling for not being a good enough 2C when Granlund and McTavish were either hurt or incompetent.

I never quite understood why we didn't qualify or try to re-sign Perreault* (or better yet, give up something other than Bonino in the Kesler trade). The offensive depth was never quite enough and that was Murray's biggest issue imo - we were always a piece short. We just had to hold onto the Jacob Larsson and Max Jones picks 😡

*I realize Perreault was smaller and not great in his own end, but you can't just let 40+ points walk without being replaced.

This was Murray's fatal flaw, even when he was mostly managing the roster pretty well. I hated the annual "which team beat us and/or won the Cup? Let's be more like them!" roster tinkering. It was dumb because there was never any way to completely remake the roster from one season to the next, so you wound up with this Frankenstein's monster-esque amalgamation of disparate parts.

This is how we ended up with such Ducks legends as:
  • Mark Fistric and Tim Jackman (bigger d-men!)
  • Rene Borque (be tougher!)
  • Nate Thompson (more defensive forwards!)
  • Carl Hagelin (faster!)
I was a fan of how Murray managed the roster but looking back the whole copying the team that beat them or team that won the cup was way too reactionary of Murray. He needed to pick a team model and stick to it.

Brian Gibbons 5'8 was another one of his 'Get Faster' signings.

Don't forget the summer of 2012 signings of Souray and Allen lol
Wow, there's a blast from the past. I remember running into him in Newport Beach when we were both going to the same place for physical therapy for hand injuries. That mofo had enormous hands. The rest of him was pretty ginormous too. He was not a guy I would ever want to tangle with. Don't ever recall him doing much for the ducks though.

Never thought Andersson was that great. If he isn’t racking up points, he’s pretty useless.

Unrelated, but Vegas just got away with an obvious pick that almost led to a goal. Some things never change.

And after letting that go, they call the Canes for interference when Hart kicks his skate out and a guy unwittingly clips him outside the crease. Incredible. When will the Vegas love affair end?

This seems so overblown. We’re talking tertiary players or like 7th dmen/13th forwards here. Just the fringes of the roster. Its not like there was ever a chance we was going to move off any of the core guys who actually dictate team identity.

IMO, your depth players to a large degree are what dictates your identity more than the couple of core guys.
