GDT: Around the NHL - Playoff Edition

Performance relative to cap space is what's in question. Maybe you're better off with 2-4 players for that 14M? Then you're not dependant on one guy so much. Maybe a few of those guys outplay their cap hit as well?

For example we just had Pacioretty and Domi outscore Matthews and Tavares in this series, at bargain bin pricing. With way less minutes too.
It's the depth that even made this go 7.

Thornton and Marleau were the face of choking in the league in the previous generation and they won 8 playoff series in 9 seasons vs the Leafs 2 in 9 seasons. I guess the Leafs can hold onto the hope that they did eventually go to the Cup final in their 11th season.

This is much worse though. We made b2b finals and won one. In 2013 we made R3.
The Leafs have scored 1 goal in each of their last 5 game 7's.
They went 0-7 in them in this era.

And then there's very clear character issues with the core at crunch time. They lack leadership.
We never had to worry about Sid, Letang, Malkin being gamers.

How can you trust the Leafs core moving forward? You can't. The sample size is overwhelming now. You have to blow it up. Regular season results be damned. Need a new formula or Cups aren't happening.

So these idiots will chose one wanker to do most of them and then they don't post any actual info. None. So you don't know line-ups, stats, etc. These are supposed fans? Lol. It's the absolute f***ing worst to try to see some info and there's literally none and then you see several of these boards have one tit that is doing all of them and doing an absolute piss poor job at it.

Even if we have a sign up for ours, at any given GDT, it's better than the vast majority around these parts.

The leafs blaming the core is funny to me, because I truly don't think the core was the problem at all. The Oilers also have a mess of a cap issue with their top players and somehow found better ways to surround them with better talent. That is just comical to me.

Leafs were top 6 heavy and didn't understand how to spread that talent out, I thought Matthews was this insane player that didn't need Marner? Yet they had him and Knies as a trio, 2nd line is also stacked with Nylander and Tavares, but then their 3rd line is a shit show and that 4th line is even worse. They blew a lot to get Laughton to be....a 4C? lol.

Their issue is Treliving had a chance to really fix the problems they claim Dubas caused and instead, did jack shit, made a lot of boneheaded moves and blew a lot of their draft capital for the same result as previous years.

Treliving traded a 1st in the deal for Carlo which means no 2026 1st, then the 2027 1st was in the deal for Laughton (Dubas dealt that 2025 1st in the deal for McCabe). So now they will lose Marner, should walk away from Tavares and learn nothing from it. That depth was truly a joke.

Which makes sense if you can find those 2-4 players. Looking at free agency though I’m not sure what combination of players is going to make them better and they don’t have too much in the way of assets to trade.

Always thought it was hilarious that those two were amongst the vets the Leafs brought in to help guide their young core. I guess less hilarious since Dubas was management though lol

How does a team lose SEVEN (7) STRAIGHT winner-take-all games in the postseason? As much as it sucked to miss the PO's these past 3 seasons, we can at least go back in time and watch 3 Stanley Cup victories in HiDef.

The Leafs haven't even been to the Final since the JOHNSON administration. How do you not luck into at least an appearance in that time?

Hell, at least we can watch all five Stanley cups in color.

Yea but you have to be willing to part with good players to get more "useful" players on your team.
If Horny hadn't worked out, JR would have been the laughingstock of the league. That trade on it's face seemed like a major fail when you consider how many points went out with Neal and the return of Horny and some other vanilla guy (can't remember his name..think it started with a 'P').

But I was tired of Neal being an asshole and not doing anything in the playoffs. Dude's shot was legit, but he didn't have a place on this team when chips were down.

IMO, that's precisely the problem with their core. They NEED to play with one another because they're not the type of players who can play with two scrubs and produce.

That's what made Sid and Geno so special. We could spread the talent around because those two could play with the likes of old man Guerin, Fedotenko, Talbot, Sheary, etc. and still go deep in the playoffs. Matthews NEEDS either Marner or Nylander on his line to generate those chances because he's not the type of player who will be point per game if he's flanked by Laughton and Jarnkrok (for comparables to the guys Sid and Geno played with during Cup runs).

And IMO, Tavares has always been overrated. He was made out to be this elite, almost generational player when he was much closer to a point per game, "good" player. And he's even worse now that he's old and skates like Joe Thornton. He'd be lost without Nylander carrying the puck for that line.

I know these trades aren't necessarily available, but Toronto could use a Marner for Brady Tkachuk type deal. Lose something with regards to overall point production, but gain in dirty goal scoring and physicality.
