GDT: Around the NHL - Playoff Edition

So who wins this whole thing? This is about as hard of a playoffs to call in recent memory, in terms of the champion. I could make good arguments for 4 of the 6 remaining teams.
Hell, even Winnipeg is still in this if Hellebuyck turns it around. Toronto is the only team left I'm prepared to cross off. They just don't have the spine.

I’m gonna say Edmonton. For better or worse they’ve been the most consistent. The east has looked pretty weak so far.

N
I saw this on instagram. OV has gotten past the second round once in his 20 year career.
I don't blame the HF Caps board from sticky-ing their championship GDT.

2018 is the ONLY year they have had an actual playoff run since the late 90's - good thing they won it all that year.

EDIT for facts:

Since the Caps entered the league in 1974, they have only been past the 2nd round THREE times!

1990 (lost 3rd round)
1998 (lost 4th round)
2018 (Won Cup)

Wow. Just, wow.

I don’t get the Oil and McD hate though to be honest. It’s like hating on us 10-15 years ago. Or the gleefulness of a canadian team not winning, which existed for some reason even before the current political climate.
I don’t either. As a hockey fan I find watching McDavid and Drai entertaining.

Dallas' power play looked like it was run by Reirden yesterday. And yes, I know that their actual power play coach Steve Spott is notorious for shitty PPs too but it looked pretty good so far in these playoffs. Also, Jaime Benn is douchebag once again. Color me stunned.

The Caps' Cinderella year is over and hopefully CAR wins it all. Two former Penguins scoring but no GWG this time. Let's see if Andersen will manage not to get injured in the ECF.

I was going to say this before I read your post. Every time I see a McDavid/Draisaitl hate post, it reminds me so much of what people said when they were hating on us while Crosby and Malkin were legitimately the 2 best players in the league.

I mean, I'm still not rooting for them because I want Sid's legacy as entrenched as possible  but they're still electric

It's no wonder Ovechkin's managed to stay healthy his entire career. He does about as much skating as I do nowadays and I haven't skated since I was in my 20's.
There’s a great shot of him casually skating back to the defensive zone during the GWG. Approaching a controller disconnected-level of defensive effort, hoping his teammates create a turnover and spring him for a breakaway. Instead, they gave up the series-winning goal while outmanned in their own zone thanks to him.

There was also a sequence in the 2nd period where he just glided back and got beat by Stankoven and the offensive pressure by the Canes lead to a PP

I mean, at this point it's probably more difficult to find a clip of him actually skating. His entire game consists of him gliding around for 99% of his shifts. The only time he actually takes a skating stride is when his teammate has already done all the work and is ready to pass the puck to him in the offensive zone.

The Canada WJC trial is something else. I use to love that hockey players were in general good people compared to athletes from other sports but it seems as it becomes an upper/upper middle class only sport that has changed.

Not assessing guilt, but they’re coming off as POS’.

He honestly needs to drop weight and play at a lighter weight given his age to help with his skating.

Lmao what? What do you think athletes have been doing this whole time? If anything it used to be significantly worse in the 70s-90s. Also this woman sounds like a real piece of work too. Everybody involved looks like an idiot.

Ovi would need to lose 22-33lbs to be athletic and reasonably fast again. At the age of 39, I don't see that happening with him. I think he's more likely to go down the Maradonna or Ronaldo route at the end of his career and become excessively fat.

He’s kind of there already. Hell during the offseason he implodes in size and has to come back down to 240ish again by the time pre season comes around. He’s stated that he hates off season training.

On the one hand, this is quite surprising, because even DEL players now take a maximum of 2-3 weeks off after the season and then get back into training.

On the other hand, it also shows what an absolutely exceptional talent Ovi is. Imagine if he had continuously gotten the best out of his body.
