GDT: Around the NHL - Playoff Edition

Every time I watched the Avs it seemed obvious that Rantanen was not only easily one of their best players (I often came away more impressed with him than Mac) but one of the very best wings in the whole game... so I was absolutely shocked when they decided he wasn't in their plans.

Small side lol to Carolina, too
Agree.

I was kinda trippin when he was struggling some with CAR and early in his Dallas stint. Like was I misremembering how good he was?

I'll still die on the hill that Staal should've been developed as a power foward winger for Geno's line.
I do think Staal being typecast as a shutdown 3C stunted his offensive development. Doubt he had the natural skill to ever be some sort of 40 goal, 80 point offensive winger. But I could see him being that 25-30 goal, 60-ish point defensively strong winger, if he was developed more in an offensive role as a youngster.

Yeah, could've been a Mark Stone kinda guy.

Aside from this, I always thought Staal would have benefitted from one more year in juniors to hone his offense and really dominate as he hadn't really done that before hitting the NHL. I mean it's cool he made the team so young but I always wondered if his game suffered a bit for it. If I'm being honest probably not... he was always a little bit of a boner in the OZ. But dude was a horse and would have probably made a nice power winger/center hybrid.

Trying to put Malkin on HIS wing was the height of stupidity, though. I've come around on Staal and his role here in the intervening years but the dude could barely make a clean ten foot pass through the NZ nevermind pivot the second line next to a guy who was his superior in just about every way. It wasn't fair to him if nothing else.

I'm still trying to figure out how that is a penalty on Orlov. Unreal. For 30 years I've been ahead of the refs when watching the game. Every instinct was just disproven. And then Wilson jumps at Svechnikovs head as well. Well aware of why the NHL level is becoming/became a farce. Like every sport now. It's hard to watch.

Red Wings fans in 2008/09 should look at those Pens teams as stables of the modern era compared to this trash.

Adin Hill doing his best Jarry impression in that period. What's with the Oilers getting back to back shitty performances out of the opposition goalie? First Kuemper forgot how to play goalie and now Hill's letting in unscreened 30 foot wrist shots from deep out.

Oilers are gonna make short work of the Knights…Hill hasn’t been very good…for all we hate them, Oilers are looking like a good pick for a SC this year
