GDT: Around the NHL - Playoff Edition

Toronto has done a lot better at responding rather than getting in their heads. Whatever is going on with their system and players is kinda irrelevant, they seem like they want to win rather than not wanting to lose like the last....10 years. Domi, Pacioretty and Nylander are clutch.
Berube has them focused on the task, I think for a while they were like the Pens where getting under their skin wasn't that hard and after that it was easy to see it spread into self doubt and other issues. This time around, they look like a very focused team and have the next man up mentality of if so and so doesn't step up, someone else does until that bloke does again.

Trading Rantanen has to be one of those instantly fireable offenses.

Also, Hellebuyck continues to not be able to show he's elite in the playoffs. Again, doesn't matter if the goals are soft or completely his fault. At some point, a Vezina winner and potential Hart winner should be able to go a game without letting in 3+ goals against.

In the Toronto series, Florida's looking leaky defensively. Yes, they're getting more shots, but it seems like the shots the Leafs *do* get are these 3 on 2 chances where they're allowed to make these cross ice passes uncontested. Tkachuk's been an absolute ghost, too. He's being badly outplayed by like half the Panthers' roster.

Colorado did the same thing Dubas did with Jake. They overthought it and tried to get too cute. Unless you’re outright tanking the best option is always to retain to talent.

Every time I watched the Avs it seemed obvious that Rantanen was not only easily one of their best players (I often came away more impressed with him than Mac) but one of the very best wings in the whole game... so I was absolutely shocked when they decided he wasn't in their plans.

Small side lol to Carolina, too

Cleaning a well-used college town Taco Bell bathroom would be too good for Quenneville. And yet he gets to continue making boatloads of money and hold an extremely exclusive (if not massively overrated) position in this league. I would make a comment about how gross this league is but lets face it... nasty, abhorrent people devoid of any character or moral fiber sure seem to go places these days in general.

It says something about the league - not just Anaheim - that he got the job. That having been said, the hire means the Ducks are serious about winning. Verbeek said (and I'm paraphrasing) the team needs to improve by 20 points to take that next step. Quenneville is the most qualified coach for that.

probably didn’t have to pay him much and given PR optics and his age hes an easy guy to fire if he doesn’t deliver exact results you want or better options become available.

Hard to say about the dollars. He's coached close to 1800 games, collected around 1000 wins, and won three Cups. I think the Ducks would have to make it worth his time. However, the Ducks have never been huge spenders.

I'm guessing it came down to a teams would consider hiring him. The Rangers had been talked about during the season, and the OIlers (Bowman) were mentioned at one point.

Yeah this is what I mean. Ducks don’t pay- so doubt Q got paid.

To them- they got a guy with 3 cups for likely 1/3rd or less than what Sully got (AAV).
