GDT: Around the NHL - Playoff Edition

Rip thought they were resting him.

Fr tho last goal was not on Skinner
1st goal I take issue with. Bad rebound control and positioning afterward.
2nd goal was a pretty solid move by Smith, coming in at speed.
3rd goal I think was pretty tough. Quick-fire give-and-go at close range. Savable with excellent play, perhaps, but not one I expect him to make.
4th goal... Obviously Draisatil screwed him there, but I think he was also over-aggressive, telescoping out like that. The angle was there for Smith to score directly once he got around him, without Draisaitl's help. If Skinner just played it positionally and held his crease, I think that game goes to OT.

I like the fact that outside of Game 1 of the Habs series, Ovechkin has been a ghost who just glides around the ice waiting for someone else to do all the work. Yet we've got folks talking about him being better than Crosby this year because the Caps finished 1st.

Like, great, he's still got a knack for scoring goals. But as an overall impact offensive player, he hasn't been on Crosby's level since the 2005-2011 stretch.
If Ovi scored 50 goals and 0 assists next year, and Crosby scored 30 goals and 60 assists, half the main board would say Ovi had a better season because 50 goals > 30 goals.

That's pretty much what happened this year. Ovechkin put up his usual Cy Young type season where he glides around for 90% of the game in his "controller disconnected" gliding stride, until one of his teammates carries the puck up the ice, gains the zone, then makes a pass to him. He literally touches the puck for a fraction of a second on his shift and somehow that's more impactful than Crosby doing the majority of the legwork for his lines' goals, but he's apparently a better player because the Caps finished first.

There's a reason Ovechkin's team has gotten out of the 2nd round one time in his career. It's the season when someone else (Kuznetsov) played at a Conn Smythe level and was the main puck carrier/offensive creator for that line. Big surprise the Caps have never done shit all when Kuznetsov came back down to Earth.

I mean, then again…

Mike Sullivan literally f***ed over the line up and Malkin so Crosby could get Rakell to bail his line out.

*Sidney Crosby having a slower start than Malkin*

Sid to Sully…

That's been the entire basis of how both players have been compared forever. Sid's clearly the better player in every aspect except goal scoring, and to Ovechkin's credit, he's arguably the best ever to do it. But anybody who actually watches or follows Sid and Ovechkin throughout the years knows it's not even close.

One of life’s greatest mysteries and one the NHL hasn’t yet solved, is why the hell so many gingers are attracted to this sport…I have yet to be given a logical answer to this question lol

(ii) A kicked puck that deflects off the stick of any player (excluding the goalkeeper’s stick) shall be ruled a good goal.

I think I heard someone say it wasn't a distinct kicking motion. Sure looked like it to me. And under the above rule, if it's a kicked puck, it should still be no goal because it went off of CH's stick. Maybe they just figured, CH played it so badly, he didn't deserve the benefit of the doubt. Or whatever logic they use in Toronto.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter.

I'll be honest I wouldn't feel comfortable as a Leafs fan after either outcome tonight. Being tied 2-2 would be rough, going up 3-1 brings back nightmares.

Hope Bob can stabilize. He's been the difference thus far, in a bad way, for Florida.
