You thought 6 pm weeknight games were weird? Wait until we have 2 AM Knight/Jets matchups on the Deuce.
Let’s hope there’s some sort of stipulation on there and what channel actually gets what. This I believe is good overall for the league. It will be interesting to see who gets the other half of the package.

Cant wait to see Stephen A forced to talk about hockey despite not caring about it. Nhl should try to do what Nfl and Nba does and get multiple media partners

The only ESPN Steve that matters when it comes to hockey:

Also, some Rangers related trivia: Who was the first host of ESPN NHL 2Night when it debuted in 1995?

ESPN doesn’t have the cache it had a few years ago but it does have a money to throw around and still has excellent distribution. The is good for the league and good for the players. Streaming on ESPN+ will likely be a big part of this deal. NBC left with sloppy seconds.

Well, both probably are.

Thorne got whacked by the Orioles this year.

Clement is officially retired although he may also have been shown the door by the Flyers.

I could sign up for a reunion.

Posted by ESPN and NHL today:

Uh, that video is basically all Gary Thorne, so they BETTER be bringing him on board.

Thorne is 72. Sam Rosen is 73. Al Michaels is 76.

Presumably he could have a half decade left at least.

I hope this TV deal opens up new opportunities for the EA NHL franchise. I despise NBC and its commentating. Bring back Gary Thorne or Jim Hughson for play by play. They were and always will be the best play by play for NHL video games.

Why does ESPN want hockey again?
Maybe trying to get more people to subscribe to the ESPN+ streaming service. Sports are good because unlike a favorite show that someone can subscribe to a service for, binge all the episodes, then cancel until the service has something they want to watch again, major sports are a year-round business.

Heard from a good source that the ESPN deal is worth approx. $2.75 Billion over 7 years. This would mean the entire TV package will come in at/around $5 Billion, a huge increase for the league.

The last deal was $2 billion over 10 years or $200m a year. If ESPN is giving $2.75b over 7 years and NBC or another partner matches that, that's ~$5bn over just 7 years, or $714m a year in TV revenue. If those ESPN numbers are right, the ESPN deal alone is $392m a year, or just about double the NHL's last deal.

Then you can probably count on full-ish arenas as soon as next year in some places, certainly by the next season at this rate. Then don't forget the franchise fee of $600m that is being paid.

Ergo I don't believe Bettman at all that the cap is going to stay flat for four years. Why? Are owners going to demand it to recoup losses? Revenues are skyrocketing.

So what does this mean as in terms of paying? will this a channel to pay for ?

edit: I looked it up. I dont know why I didnt do that from the beginning. Carry on.

I read some speculation they think the NBC portion of the tv deal could result in an extra 100 million each season for the league.

Don’t think NBC is going to be paying anything close to the what ESPN did
