Around the NHL - Part XLV (Playoffs edition)

It’s feeling a lot like a Florida repeat with a team that comes back just as strong next year. They’ve got lots of cap space. Ekblad probably gets the same/less to stay. They’re a wagon. Which is a good reason to just get younger and retool rather than go for it because Panarin.

I love the Panthers. They’re making Aho’s life hell after he targeted the knee. On the other hand, the Rangers didn’t even lay a finger on him after he kneed Fox.

Everything that the Rangers do wrong the Panthers do right.
Trouba and Laf both tried to fight him but Aho wants no part if it. Trouba brought it up in his interview after the game.

It's a shame Rangers can't draft power forwards that Tkachuk. Imagine if Kreider had the guts to play like type pf aggressive style. Big players that play soft and small is the Rangers DNA.

One guy isn't going to do it for us. Florida is a forechecking/backchecking monster. We were never like that and never will be. We're the type of team that plays soft in the D zone and drop-passes on breakaways.

Well, as long as we're doing this- just about every single Panthers top player is still in their late 20's.

NYRs forward core is old old. Not 02 Red Wings Hall of Fame roster old, but pretty close to 94 Rangers old.

And signed long term. And Florida has 20M cap space with just two main pieces needing contracts, and Ekblad unlikely to get a raise/possibly take less to stay. We’re in a position where Florida will be a super power for a couple more years and it’s the perfect time to get younger and take a step back in order to take a step forward. We won’t, but looking around, we’ve probably got two years before we’re realistically beating an Edmonton or Florida team anyway, so it’s the perfect time to retool but unfortunately we’re always all in. Mike Sullivan will be the difference. For sure.

Where were our vaunted team leaders and spiritual core of the Team, Goodrow and Trouba, to exact this retribution? Nowhere, that's where.

I think losing Bennett will actually be a bigger deal than many believe

The funny thing is all Drury has drafted are forechecking and backchecking monsters. The problem is even if 1/3 these guys become competent NHL players, then the Rangers are back to their 2010-11 -- 2012-13 version.

The things with playoffs is you need to be able to play a hard, nasty physical game....at least be able to match that with any team you might face. 'We'll kill them on the power play!' but the refs aren't going to save you by giving the other team tons of extra penalties because they're being mean to you. Not in the playoffs anyway. Brind'amour has a turn the other cheek kind of team and Florida is just eating them up. When things get down to the nitty gritty hockey is a combat sport and there's not enough combat in the Canes. There wasn't last year or the year before either. Brind'amour is a really good coach for the regular season but I don't think his team is ever going to win a Cup with the approach to playoff hockey they have. To me they're more of a pretender than even we were last year.

We have some young forwards still developing who can help us perhaps with this. Cuylle. Rempe and Edstrom. Perhaps Othmann and Berard. Maybe some other guys in Hartford. Our top 6 don't have anything like a Tkachuk or Bennett though. Barkov's a big body who will drive the net. We don't have a player in our top 6 like that either.
